We're fairly adventerous travelers and I was looking for an "Authentic" experience to start our trip to Costa Rica, but didn't want to compromise on safety and cleanliness, especially on the first night in country. (my husband has travelled and lived in central america on a budget, so we're familiar with the not so nice kind of "authentic"!) Hotel Santo... More

This hotel is close to all the attractions in San Jose. Breakfast was good. We didn't try the restaurant in the evening. There are some cheap authentic eateries across the road if you don't want to go far. The rooms were nice although did smell a bit damp. There was internet in the hotel but it wasn't free like most... I did not want a plaster palace like the Hilton. After checking the Internet I settled on the Hotel Santo Tomas and crossed my fingers. It was all I could have wanted. At first glance I was taken aback by the look of the street and the locked gate, but the hotel is, above all, squeaky clean, the rooms, while lacking... More

Having stayed in almost all of the downtown San Jose Hotels over the last 15 years... it is one of my favorite resting spots and it easy to compare Santo Tomas with others. There are two reviews … within two reviews… If you prefer the consistency and blandness of the Marriott, Courtyard, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, etc. then Santo Tomas... More

Parking is an additional $11+ per night. Someone has to open the gate every time you want to leave or come in. Staff at times were a bit unprofessional and arrogant. The walls are very thin. You can hear EVERYTHING going on in the neighboring rooms. Traffic is horrible during weekdays. Their “safe” is a compartment that locks on the... More

Hi Jancort, This is from Thomas , the owner of Hotel Santo Tomas in San Jose , Costa Rica. We do offer off street, gated, private, secure parking in San Jose, something most downtown hotels don't offer and the modest price of .45 cents per hour is cheaper than you will find anywhere. Normally we have only 3 or 4... More

This hotel has poor security in my opinion. The room was clean but walking there even in the daytime felt dangerous to me and my children. The staff were mostly nice but I felt that the management was not responsive to concerns I brought up about security. I would say this hotel is comfortable and clean but I would recommend... More

Hi therese3, This is from Thomas the owner of the Hotel Santo Tomas. We stayed at the Santo Tomas Hotel for four nights prior to a Caravan tour. We chose the balcony room with queen bed, and were really pleased with having a balcony with two comfortable chairs that overlooked the small courtyard and pool. The entire hotel was immaculate, with great attention paid to details like lovely plants, perfect paint everywhere, and... More

Hi Arequipa, I wanted to say that in one fell swoop you described what I have been trying to do with the hotel for our guests. I don't profess to be the Marriott or any other big 5 star hotel . I am trying to provide a great product with a true Costa Rica feel at a very fair price.... More

This hotel is based around a 100 year old residence and, like most of Costa Rica, has open air areas. It is less like a hotel than an large B&B. When we arrived, we SAT down at the desk and filled out a big old fashioned register; the gentleman on the desk arranged for a cab to the airport. The... More

I found the Hotel still as great as during last visits. They have done some cosmetic work like railings around and to the pool. Added some nice rooms upstairs overlooking the pool. Its still my favorite place. They now have a virtual tour of the Hotel on the internet. Ernie-Salem, OR

We stayed at this hotel for 3 short periods. All the staff but one were very helpful and friendly. We loved the ambience of the high ceilings and cool tile floors. We had an upgraded double and it was nice. The linens were a bit shabby, but the whole scene was great. Our breakfast was quick and delicious, the patios... More
