Difficult to locate initially ( we drove from Tamarindo), but once there, we appreciated this property. Tom, the American owner, has resided in Costa Rica for 29 years. Suspect that he is from Texas or somewhere else in American Southwest. Helped us to find our way to Escazu to the CIMA Hospital for health checkups. He and his wife have... More

Our group of seven adults chose this hotel for a relaxing day and hot showers between nice, but primitive, lodging in Puerto Viejo...and headed to another rental in the cloud forest. The hotel is lovely and staff friendly and helpful. Omar got us taxis, helped us find transport up north, recommended dinner spots, and told us the safest places to... More

Hola Elaine, I remember your group , you guys were pretty lively in the breakfast area that morning, I had a lot of fun , laughing it up with the group. The rooms you reserved were the original dining room built in 1908 , 10 children plus everyone else in there back then , well you can image the size... More

Much like The Very Best Marigold Hotel except everything here actually works. This is a lovely little oasis in the heart of San Jose. Built over 20 years ago by the current owner, Thomas, a journeyman from North Carolina, it reflects his vision and values. It's always important to interpret these reviews with a bit of perspective about the writer... More

We stayed at Hotel Santo Tomas on our first and last nights in Cost Rica. It was a beautiful unique hotel with a super friendly accommodating staff. Rooms are large, clean and comfortable. Thomas, the owner really made every customer feel special. I observed him at breakfast taking the time to meet and greet each of his guests and offered... More

Hi Maura, It was very nice meeting and greeting you and your friends over breakfast, something I try to do everyday. Lots of clients do just what you did and stay the first and last nights, Europeans normally stay two or three nights just to adjust, pick my brains for travel tips, make some plans and off everyone goes! Yes,... More

Three companions and I had a great stay here on first landing in San Jose, and one night on our way out. Centrally located, clean, great free breakfast, a nice pool, extremely helpful staff and great advice from the former North Carolinian owner, Thomas. The staff can arrange anything for you. When I couldn't get a rental car deal I... More

Hola Michael, Hey thanks so much for listing Miguel as a staff member that was able to assist you, it's great for them to see they are appreciated. All of my staff will go out of their way to help , if possible. I thoroughly enjoyed our chats and I still love it when I hear that true Irish Boston... More

I travelled with my girlfriend in January 2015 to Costa Rica where we stayed a complete month. To start of our journey we stayed in the Hotel Santo Tomas for two nights to get accustomed to everything. The hotel is located centrally in the city in walking distance of the main square, Teatro Nacional and the National Museum. The street... More

Stayed for one night with husband and two children, 5 and 9, for one night after a week in the country side. Much cooler at night in San Jose than at the beach or the volcano. This hotel's pool and hot tub are great, just be wary of the water slide for littler children.

Bad traffic and miscommunication left my wife and I stranded in San Jose near this hotel. I rang at the gate and explained our situation to the manager. We were not looking for a room but needed someone's help. The manager immediately and graciously listened, took charge, and solved our problem. If they treat non-guests this well, they must treat... We stopped off on our first and last nights in Costa Rica, just to be near the airport. Nice place, breakfast was ok, the owner was very friendly and helpful, with some good suggestions of where to go in Costa Rica. We had an incident where we managed to lock the bathroom door from the outside, which was annoying, but... More

Hi Douglas, Funny story about the locked bath door, Happy my staff was able to assist. We are only four blocks from central avenue and for travelers not accustomed to Latin cities or Spanish speakers , they can be different. I have been walking these streets for 29 years and have never had a problem. As any where you just... More
