This is a really nice building, incredibly historical, and right next door to the National Theater. Over the years, it has housed diplomats and John F. Kennedy. The most stylish hotel in the city centre, this hotel clearly realises the problems of the bustle in San Jose by providing free ear plugs in its rooms. Other hotels please copy. Stayed at the Gran just one night. After a bad checki in experience, I went to the room which was even worse. No air conditioning...no air flow....clean but very uncomfortable, and noisey. After ten minutes I called the front desk and asked to move to another room, in hopes of getting at least some fresh air. Night clerk could not... More

Similar to many other travellers arriving into Costa Rica, we needed a place to crash en route to the coast and chose the Gran Hotel based on it's city centre location. This was a mistake. We stayed for on night in an economy room. The room was as expected for an economy room I guess. The hotel itself is attractive, and quiet at night. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is a poor value though - expensive and not very good food.

This is (wrongly in my opinion) classed a four star hotel and they seem to be simply trading on the fact that they are set slap bang in the middle of San Jose. From the outside and in the lobby, the initial impression is one of elegeant colonialism, but take the lift to your room and you find shabby rooms... More

If you're looking for a hotel in downtown San Jose, this really is the best location available - right across from the famous National Theatre. Standard rooms are cheap, breakfast is served in a wonderful historic room on the 5th floor, but service is pretty indifferent and poor.

Despite the hotel's name, our room was nothing grand, but it was fine in a no-frills way (clean and not lacking anything essential).
