Perhaps the best location in the city! Great feel, wonderful atmosphere, very affordable too! Highly recommend. We stayed for 1 night on either end of our trip. Close to airport as well (maybe 25 minutes by cab). Enjoy!

There's no compelling reason to spend more than a day in San Jose but if you are planning to do so, the Gran Hotel is a great choice. It couldn't be more central and is right opposite the Teatro and a block from the cathedral or the gold museum. It's a 25 minute drive from the airport when there is... More

Like everyone else, we traveled to CR to go to the volcano, cloud forest and beach. We did spend one night in San Jose so we could have a little time seeing the city. We arrived at the hotel pretty early. Usually hotels will find a way to accomodate you, but we did have to wait about 2.5 hours before... More

This place is perfect if you want to experience San Jose downtown in the historic section. Make sure you go to the Central Market. If you are expecting air conditioning, open the window. And if you expect to have Internet access, don't. The range on their router is "come down to the 1st floor..." Bacause that is the range. Clean,... More

The entryway is the nicest part of the hotel. It appears that the rooms haven't been updated in about 30 years. I would rate the quality as equivalent to a lower end hotel in the US. There is no ventilation in the bathrooms, which are in need of the most thorough updating. The rooms were small, the windows didn't close,... More

I spent half a year in Costa Rica a while back, so while visiting on out Honeymoon, this was our first stop. We had often eaten at the open-air restaurant facing the Teatro Nacional while I was a student, and the lobby was so lovely! It seemed like the natural choice. The rooms were pricy, more than we had agreed... More

This is a really nice building, incredibly historical, and right next door to the National Theater. Over the years, it has housed diplomats and John F. Kennedy. The lobby is beautiful and the rooms and facilities are nice. Our biggest complaint, however, was location because at night, it is not safe to walk around the neighborhood. We felt a bit... More

The most stylish hotel in the city centre, this hotel clearly realises the problems of the bustle in San Jose by providing free ear plugs in its rooms. Other hotels please copy. Sadly, bath plugs were not always provided (missing in one of my two rooms). And, also, on one of the two occasions in the month I stayed here... More

Stayed at the Gran just one night. After a bad checki in experience, I went to the room which was even worse. No air conditioning...no air flow....clean but very uncomfortable, and noisey. After ten minutes I called the front desk and asked to move to another room, in hopes of getting at least some fresh air. Night clerk could not... More

Similar to many other travellers arriving into Costa Rica, we needed a place to crash en route to the coast and chose the Gran Hotel based on it's city centre location. This was a mistake. The room was without air conditioning, dirty and in dire need of updating. The rate-inclusive breakfast was a joke and the staff in general completely... More
