The hotel's location is excellent...right in the middle of everything and you won't need a cab to get around. It has old world charm but some things are outdated like the bathtubs, this is partly because it's been declared a national landmark and there are restrictions on upgrades. No air conditioning in the room, but we didn't need it. The... More

I am currently at this hotel. As a chef who is from New York City but has been working in Guanacaste, Costa Rica for the past 4 months I cannot say enough great things about this hotel. The restaurant is serviced by a staff that must have been trained in Europe for the way they care for your every need.... More

First the good. You cannot beat the location - in the heart of San Jose so there's really no need to take a taxi to get to the top 5 historical lankmarks of San Jose. The staff is awesome, very accommodating and speak perfect english (for those who need some work on our spanish). The greatest thing about this hotel... More

We stayed in the Gran Hotel for the first night of our three night stay in San Jose. The location is perfect, and the public areas are elegant. The breakfast is very good. However, the room was stuffy and totally lacking in charm. The bed coverings were dusty and musty. It was impossible to get the water in the shower... More

Have stayed 4 times over 8 years and at this point it's the only place I stay in San Jose. And while I always strongly recommend to friends they not visit San Jose when traveling to Costa Rica, if they insist I recommand Gran Hotel. The location is unbeatable, the security seems tight, the restored lobby is absolutely gorgeous --... More

This hotel is in the downtown area of San Jose and was built as a hotel for visiting dignitaries - the government commissioned it and held aside 2 rooms for presidential visits, etc. The hotel is like a lovely old lady who is worn around the edges, yet still maintains her dignity; elegant architecture, but worn carpets. The staff are... More

Clean hotel with a lot of vintage appeal. Hot water for showers is not consistent. Some rooms are noisy. You do not want to be right under the pool table. Service in the casual retaurant is excrutiatinglu slow. The upscale restaurant is fabulous and great service. Don't take anything to Costa Rica you care about. My jacket went missing from... More

We are currently staying at this hotel. It has a prime location in downtown San Jose. I am travelling with my mother and we have felt very safe overall. The hotel restaurant, although pricey, serves good food. The breakfast buffet is decent and convenient. However, if you are a light sleeper, DO NOT stay here. The walls seem to be... More

We spent a little over three weeks driving all over Costa Rica. We spent three nights at the start of the trip and three nights at the end at the Gran Hotel. We returned to the hotel because of our excellent experience during our first stay .Even before entering the hotel you hear live music from the grand piano [playing... More

Great location right downtown. Nice lobby. Beautiful breakfast room with a nice view and bountiful breakfast. Awful rooms (we tried two different ones and had family in others). The beds are rock hard and made with wrong sized sheets. Noise from both the outside and adjoining rooms could be heard ALL THE TIME. Shower randomly went from boiling hot to... More
