Similar to many other travellers arriving into Costa Rica, we needed a place to crash en route to the coast and chose the Gran Hotel based on it's city centre location. This was a mistake. The room was without air conditioning, dirty and in dire need of updating. The rate-inclusive breakfast was a joke and the staff in general completely... More

We stayed for on night in an economy room. The room was as expected for an economy room I guess. The hotel itself is attractive, and quiet at night. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is a poor value though - expensive and not very good food.

I stayed here with a friend, twice during my recent trip to Costa Rica. Location: Hotel is located right in the heart of San Jose, about 30 minutes from the airport. Perfect location and walking distance to everything in San Jose. Service: The check-in/check-out staff were a little slow and some spoke very very poor English but they still were... More

We stayed in Gran Hotel for one night twice during our trip to Costa Rica. We didn’t expect much after having read the reviews in Tripadvisor so we were actually positively surprised. The first time we stayed at the hotel we had a very small and rather dull room but the second time our room was both spacious and nice... More

This is (wrongly in my opinion) classed a four star hotel and they seem to be simply trading on the fact that they are set slap bang in the middle of San Jose. From the outside and in the lobby, the initial impression is one of elegeant colonialism, but take the lift to your room and you find shabby rooms... More

If you're looking for a hotel in downtown San Jose, this really is the best location available - right across from the famous National Theatre. Standard rooms are cheap, breakfast is served in a wonderful historic room on the 5th floor, but service is pretty indifferent and poor.

Despite the hotel's name, our room was nothing grand, but it was fine in a no-frills way (clean and not lacking anything essential). The location is the reason to stay at this hotel - it's literally next to the Teatro Nacional, and a great starting point to walk around and explore. It's also an easy drive from the hotel to... This hotel is in a fantastic location near the shops and restaurants, and within walking distance of the main sights and museums. We thought it had lots of character - the room wasn't new but it had charm, everything worked well and it was spotlessly clean (I've stayed in a lot of newly decorated rooms that are dirty, and I... The hotel itself is really beautiful but a little dated. The beds are horrible - so don't go there looking for a comfy nights sleep. Also there is no air conditioning so that might be a problem. Also the breakfast, while it looks impressive since its in a ballroom, was actually kind of gross. We were there early (like 7am... More
