My husband and I have spent a few days at the Makanda hotel and we absolutely loved it. Just 11 rooms tucked in the tropical forest with breathtaking views of the ocean. Guests can enjoy real privacy as most rooms/villas are isolated from one another. Staff is is extremely professional and kind, and we received the type of service one... More

Hotel located on the beautiful hill in the countryside with fantastic ocean views. Rooms are spacious, clean with a small terrace. View of the green and the ocean is fascinating. The hotel also features a beautiful pool overlooking the ocean. The restaurant is stylish with good cuisine. I highly recommend a visit.

We came for our honeymoon and wanted to go 'all out' for our first major stop. Makanda by the sea didn't disappoint in terms of providing a natural, relaxing experience in the middle of the jungle. We followed and observed a troupe of Capuchin monkeys on our way to the private beach. The beach itself isn't one to lay out your... More

We stayed at Makanda in December 2015 at the end of our tour of Costa Rica. We were greeted at Reception by the friendly owner who talked us through how everything worked (breakfast to be taken in the room, timings of pool, restaurant, room service etc). He then told us we had been upgraded and showed us to our room,... More

The arrogance and ignorance of the Russian owner spoils what is a beautiful hotel in a stunning location, holding itself out as a 5 star hotel. 1. Owner insists that loud music played at dinner inspite of all the diners asking for it to be turned off, to enable us to hear the sounds of the jungle at night. 2.... More

We were booked in unit 9 which had its own new shared-private pool and jacuzzi (with unit 11). The unit is very visually amazing when you walk in but then you figure out they've gone way overboard on technology and interior design features that makes you wonder if they hired students to design the suites. The jacuzzi did not work.... More

The hotel and surrounding property are located in an astonishing setting in the middle of the jungle, and the Villa (n. 9) to which we were upgraded as soon as we booked (for reasons that then became obvious), was very comfortable (though it had practically no cupboard space and no drawers, no microwave and a broken safe). While we did... More

Let me just say, shame on me for waiting this long to write a review on those hidden gem. I have found since I have visited Costa Rica many people are starting to travel and enjoy the peaceful life setting in this beautiful country. My husband and I went to Makanda for our honeymoon. It is quite a drive from... More

The room was amazing, so beautiful, clean and had amazing views over the surrounding nature of Manuel Antonio and down to the sea. The infinity pool was beautiful, would highly recommend. There were monkeys and wildlife everywhere. The private beach is quite a walk down and can be tricky if you aren't wearing good footwear and the beach is small... More

The villa was as expected: beautiful, clean and comfortable. Great bed and linens (I'm picky) and good sound system. I really enjoyed the private swimming pool, but the water might be a little cold for some people. The restaurant is ok, for Costa Rica's standards. There's tea (lipton, so if you're really into tea, better bring your own) and coffee... More
