i've been to costa rica many times and this was one of the most adorable places i've ever stayed. perfect if you're looking for an eclectic, funky place where each room is a little different and with tons of character. the grounds are beautiful and you are right in the jungle. i went with my boyfriend and my parents, and... more

I wouldn't say I loved Vela Bar but it worked for the one night we were there. Our other hostel had been booked when we wanted to stay an extra night in MA so we moved over here due to the proximity of the park. The room was pretty basic but had A/C and a pretty big fridge in the... more

Our room had mosquitoes inside. Lots of plants right outside the door so when the maid cleans they come in. No hand towels nor wash cloths provided; only one very small bath towel per person that you cannot take to the beach. They charge $3 per day to rent a beach towel. No thermostat on the a/c, only high or... more

Myself, my son and his friend stayed at Vela Bar for 2 nights. We LOVED the location! The restaraunt is a little pricey, but we ate next door for really cheap! The national forest entrance is about a block away and the Ocean is about 2 blocks away. people were very friendly. Room was basic but clean and worth price... more

I stayed here based on these good reviews, which proved true. The rooms are clean and simple; a good value in M.A. at $53 including in-room fridge. The location is excellent; walking distance away from the beach and the National Park, but away from the main road, with beautiful grounds. I met other friendly travelers who always stay here. The... more

There is a reason why Hotel Vela Bar has been a successful operation for more than 25 years -- location and service can not be matched, especially for the prices and these days there is free WiFi!! During one's travels, there are magical places that are special from the first moment you arrive, to the second you leave. A place... more

This was a very simple and clean small hotel in a park like setting. Breakfast was okay, nothing special we did not see anyone eat in the restaurant any other time during the day. There is a computer for your use for 500 colones/half hour, which was cheaper than the local internet cafe. Staff are friendly. It is minutes down... more

I stayed at Vela Bar for two nights in January 2009. I found it to be clean and found the staff to be very helpful. For $50, you can't get a nicer room this close to the beach (about a block away). Other hotels in this area are much more expensive and the fancy resorts are up on a hill... more

I spent one night at the Vela Bar and then went across the street to the cabinas over there, which were more expensive but there was a pool at the other place. The room was fine, though like every room I stayed in in Costa Rica, noise traveled easily from one room to the next. That would have been okay... more
