Mawamba is set in a well-groomed garden sandwiched between an angry-looking Caribbean Sea (choices of death include being pulled out to sea by rip tides, or being lunch for crocs and sharks - swimming is definitely not advised although the beach is worth a visit) and the serene waterways of the Tortuguero national park. The lodge is efficiently run with... More

One of the best places we visited in Costa Rica. So exciting arriving by river and fabulous situation between the wild Pacific Ocean turtle beach and the mysterious Canales edged by jungle. We really enjoyed every tour they offered as part of the package and also went out in the misty dawn on a boat ride when the birds and... More

we stayed here 2 nights in April, the Rooms were basic with a comfortable bed we had a rocking chair and a hammock on the porch which was just outside our bedroom door. The grounds were beautiful with a butterfly garden and a frog enclosure. The food was very nice the portions were not very large but if you asked... More

This lodge is rustic to be sure. The beds are uncomfortable - nothing but springs. There is very little privacy - no way to cover the windows without closing the shutters and cutting off the little bit of air blowing into the hot space. It was very hot and humid. We took lots of showers to cool off but our... More

We stayed here over Easter week in April with two kids. We were worried about it as it was such a long trip... Bus ride, boat ride... But in fact the getting there was half the fun and even the kids, who are not great travelers, loved it. The hotel arranges everything, picking you up in San Jose, taking a... More

My second trip to Tortuguero, my sister's first, we loved our stay at the Mawamba Lodge! Nice grounds, simple rooms, open air eating buffet style. I especially like the fact that we are so close to nature, canal on one side , ocean on the other, and OH, the iguanas! Love the Iguanas on the grounds! A very special place.

Stayed here for two nights and had a great time. We've travelled a lot but this place is remote and really unique. Mawamba Lodge is superbly located - easy to walk into Torteguero along the beach or take a trip on the canal. The grounds and swimming pool area are lovely. We thought the cabins were a bit spartan at... More

The Mawamba Lodge is set what feels like, a long way from civilisation. The riverboat journey in, was an experience in its self with the pilot stopping to view wildlife (mainly monkeys) on the way in. The huts are basic but adequate for a couple of days. Don't expect much privacy. It felt like I was back at school on... More

I came here as part of a guided tour around Costa Rica. The whole experience starts with catching the boat which is about an hour and a half along some narrow waterways with the guide pointing out various birds. Upon arrival we were all greeted with a drink and given the room keys. The nearby town of Tortugero is really... More

The Mawamba Lodge is set deep in the jungle and our riverboat journey through the narrow, winding river was a great way to arrive. On the way we saw crocodiles, kingfishers and iguanas, which were a taste of what was to come. The Lodge was rather a culture shock, as we had been staying in quiet, secluded hotels and lodges...
