rooms are very basic, but you probably don't need more when you stay in this area. We loved the design of furniture in the restaurants and bars. Nice location between the river and the ocean. The food is pretty good and the staff is very pleasant. more

My granddaughter and I stayed for two nights at the fabulous Mawamba Lodge. By day we were guided through the canals and jungle, and saw howler monkeys, spider monkeys, cayman, turtles, birds, sloths, all kinds of creatures. By night we got to witness the incredible Green Turtles lay eggs, under the care and guidance of the rangers. The food was... more

This is a remote lodge that requires travel on a gravel road and then a boat to get to. Once there, you therefore will not have access to other facilities so all food and so forth is included and provided on site. The standard options include walking around the grounds, where there are butterfly and frog breeding grounds, and taking... more

We travelled to Mawamba lodge as part of a Kuoni tour. Tortuguero is like a mini Amazon. No roads and jungle reaching right up to the waters edge. Most goods and people come in via 2 hour boat trip. Taking that into consideration this lodge is quite good. The rooms are basic and dark but the beds were OK and... more

Those researching travel to Tortuguero will swiftly appreciate that it cannot compete with the luxury accommodation on offer elsewhere in Costa Rica. We opted for Mawamba Lodge despite its mixed reviews because it seemed the best of a somewhat limited bunch. Overall, it did not disappoint and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants an authentic experience and... more

We stayed at the Mawamba Lodge as part of a tour of Costa Rica through the UK based Kuoni Travel group. Our tour group only consisted of six people and we all got on extremely well. Mawamba Lodge is set in an absolutely stunning location between one of the many canals in Tortuguero and the Caribbean sea. We arrived at... more

The tour guide Henry was nice in many ways but also took advantage of us tourists. In the bus as we went to Tortuguero he was overloading us with details about meeting times up to 2 days ahead. He then would start quizzing us about things that he said earlier. Names of rivers, restaurants, etc. I started to get apprehensive... more

Lovely hotel, loads of nature and wildlife in the hotel garden. Bar staff were the best. Rooms were very basic, just one sheet. The environment is just really damp (do not bring any books :-)). Relaxingin pool and bar after excursions is the only option. Food in buffet form at set times was not that bad (but all days the... more

Ditto everything said in the review below. Our family of 4 adults LOVED everything about this place - the grounds had everything: monkeys, sloths, pineapple bushes, avacado trees, sugar cane, tons of flowers. We enjoyed a little nap in the hammocks near the canal. The 6AM canal tour is worth the early morning rise. Food was great and plentiful (7:30... more
