Mawamba sells itself as a nature lodge, and it lives up to that image. This is a nature lodge at it's best. The pool is a great addition. Take time to enjoy the frog and butterfly garden in the Mawamba Park. The great part about this lodge is it's location on the narrow strip of land with the river on... More

I loved Mawamba Lodge! The cabins are small but have excellent layout (2 benches for luggage, shelves and hooks for hanging things) They have a chair and hammock on the front porch and a nice bathroom. The lodge is nicely laid out, good mix of privacy and interaction. The restaurant/bar/pool area is great! I liked that we sat with the... More

Although not the type of hotel we would choose to stay in as big buffet style restaurant for American and German visitors but location is amazing. Was here for Xmas and our tour leader had arranged a late birthday present of a bottle of wine and also a birthday cake which the staff all joined in to celebrate my partners... More

This hotel is in a beautiful location on the Tortuguero lagoon. I loved the hammock, and the rocking chair on the balcony. The hotel grounds are fantastic – full of tropical trees, plants and wildlife. We saw: a two-toed sloth in the garden, a massive Hercules beetle by the pool, and huge numbers of tropical birds. The hotel also has... More

I have been to Costa Rica twelve times and Tortugaro five times. This trip to Tortugaro was the worst and all due to a lackluster, unenthusiastic, non energetic guide named Steven-He was too busy on his iphone during the day and raced to get onto it after eating his dinner and not talking to any of his guests during dinner... We stayed here for two nights (12th and 13th November) on our tour. The journey to the lodge was a nightmare, the road from the restaurant was about 20km and took over two hours. Next was an hour on the boat which was excellent! Often you are limited to 10kg luggage and have to leave some behind at the restaurant... More

If you are looking for a fancy place to stay this isn't it. The rooms are simple and there aren't a lot of amenities. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing place in the heart of the Costa Rica rainforest with a river on one side and the ocean on the other this is the place. The bed mattresses... More

Mawamba is definitely a lodge and NOT a resort. They made this clear when we arrived, but it wasn't all that clear when we booked. The rooms are cute, but very much like girl/boy scout camp. The grounds are beautiful and the boat ride over was a lot of fun. Our experience was made less enjoyable because of the food.... More

We booked a morning tour with Mawamba Lodge and paid for it in cash at reception. The same charge was included in our bill at check out. We ended up paying twice for the same tour. Obviously, someone didn't make appropriate records at reception. Be careful with paying cash, make sure to ask for a receipt.

We stayed here for one night in December 2014 (after staying in another Tortuuero hotel the previous two nights). Nothing particularly wrong with the rooms and food, fairly basic (fans and buffet food) bt what disappointed us was that we were told when booking that the front desk and staff would be able to assist us with our onward travel...
