We arrived to Tortuguero via the public boat and were dropped off at Rana Roja (just mention to the boat driver to stop there). The reception was a bit tricky to find - it's right at the front of the restaurant. There are signs on the property for reception, but they will take you to the Evergreen Lodge reception. We... If we just review the hotel experience, and don't mix it with the holiday/wow-ness of the nature, Rana Roja is below the average. Of course this location is spectacular, in fact is true that you need to be somehow Indiana Jones to get there, but I was expecting something more. Rana Roja is built in between the land of another... More

Getting here is already an experience on its own. You need to travel of a dirt road for more than an hour than change into a boat and travel through rivers along caiman and other animals until you finally end up at a small jetty. When there you all of a sudden realize that just behind the first line of... More

This was a great hotel with clean rooms and I would recommend staying as the setting is lovely - monkeys visited whilst we were sitting round the pool. Staff are also friendly and helpful when questioned. Drawbacks: Taxi to the main village at $3/person one way is quite steep. Also the food isn't great. It's not bad just not great... More

This was quite an experience given the bungalows are screened (no glass windows) and you can hear the sounds of the jungle all day. It's pretty amazing to sleep right in the middle of a rain forest. The family who runs the place are really nice. You can take out a kayak for free and paddle up into remote parts... More

Getting to the lodge by boat is thrilling. We stayed two nights in a bungalow and opted for the inclusive meal plan. Be advised, especially if you are traveling with young children, that meal times are strictly observed (7-8am for breakfast, 1-2pm for lunch, 7-8pm for dinner) and you can't store any food in your bungalow because of ants/insects/etc. Pros:... There are generally two options to visit Tortuguero - the eco-lodges that have great packages and facilities, but are WAY out of town, so you are held captive there for the most part when not on tours (;-) , and you spend more than a you would really like to stay there, or staying in the village, which for many... Our third destination in our 26 day tour through Costa Rica was a gem. This hotel shows you exactly what Costa Rica is famous for, namely nature, nature and more nature. It takes about a 2 hour boatride to reach the hotel, there are no roads or other ways to reach this location. While we were here during the beginning... More
