When we arrived we had originally booked the garden view room. We had loud upstairs neighbor and told the owner. He was so sweet and moved us to the treehouse apartment room which was amazing! Open air and separate living area and kitchen. The owner is very accommodating so let him or his staff know if you need anything at... More

We didn't stay here, but visited the restaurant & bar several times. We also used the beach area and rented bikes & a bodyboard. The staff and atmosphere were super friendly. Even if you don't stay here it is definitely worth visiting.

From the staff to the amenities, the grounds, and even the daily Chef's recommended dishes, everything was absolutely fabulous at the Banana. We stayed in the Howler Suite, with gorgeous ocean views (even from the bathroom shower) and the perfect wildlife-watching vantage point, as well. This is the best place to stay in the Puerto Viejo area without a doubt.... More

We spent our last three nights with Colin and his staff and were terribly dismayed when it came time to leave. We truly wish we had just skipped the tourist trap of Arenal Volcano and spent those days here in wonderland. We met some amazing people during our stay and came home more relaxed than I have ever been after... More

We visited Costa Rica the first week in June. Hotel Banana Azul was our destination and was/is a wonderful paradise...would venture to say that this is the number one place to stay in this area, near Puerto Viejo. The staff is caring and friendly, and the relaxed atmosphere is superb. The hotel itself is very nice with spacious accommodations and... More

We're there for 3 nights. It's a special place, the decoreation of the hotel itself and the garden, the pool - all very nice. The staff are great, the most "hotelish" we've seen in costa rica at this price level. The private beach, were you can order from the bar without needing to do nothing. Just beautiful place. What missing,... More

We are an Australian couple who recently stayed at Banana Azul on 27/6/14 - 29/6/14 while exploring Costa Rica. It was a great experience and deserves to be the number one hotel in the area. It definitely has that relaxed Caribbean lifestyle. The hotel is a 3 minute drive just outside of Puerto Viejo. You can also access Puerto Viejo... More

I have spent many years living in and touring in Costa Rica, and Banana Azul is my favorite when in Puerto Viejo! A perfect blend of North American standards and Costa Rican flair. Nicely decorated with attention to detail, beautiful grounds and a wonderful mix of flora and fauna throughout create a special ambiance, combine that with a great location... More

We stayed 4 nights at Banana Azul during a 2 week trip to Costa Rica. Our plan was to spend 3 days relaxing on the beach/eating/drinking following a trip of adventure! It was relaxing, for the most part... PROS: - The beach and the drink service. They have a private beach with shaded spots to sit. It is clean, quiet... More

I find it odd that your review follows a letter to me that you felt our staff did not take this incident seriously enough. In that letter you, I also corrected that the person who took you to the clinic and stayed with you was the General Manager and his name is Jorge. He was in constant contact with me... More

Stayed for 5 days in the beginning of June. Wonderful ambiance and beautiful property!! Would stay there again...the staff is amazing. Puerto Viejo is on and popping, a great vibe! The food at Banana Azul is good and the beach set up is real nice! My only con were the skimpy beach towels, yuk! We stayed in the Apartment and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
