This hotel ended up being awesome. The restaurant was extremely slow but the entire staff was amazing. I got a great massage from Jaikel, the front desk people were friendly and helpful and the Gecko travel reps were great when planning what to do. My room was not screened in when we stayed so when i woke up at night... More

My husband and I and our two dear friends spent 5 fabulous days at this wonderful hotel. Its ground are beautiful and the owner has worked very hard to match beauty with service in a way that creates a place of ultimate relaxation. Our days consisted of coffee in the AM, reading the boards for the daily meals and happy... More

We spent two nights in this hotel and can only recommend it to anyone. The hotel is beautifully located with its own beach. The facilities are very nice and clean, rooms are amazing. The entire hotel is designed to fit into the beautiful nature surrounding it! The breakfast is included and was very tasty, you can always choose between options... More

Please note if you arrive at night in darkness you have to leave the main road onto a dirt track to get to Banana Azul - so if you have just had a five hour hysterically terrifying drive from San Jose by a crazy-fast driver constantly overtaking trucks in the dark and in the torrential rain, that foreboding feeling of... My husband and two friends recently had an exceptional stay at Banana Azul. We arrived after a long day of river rafting on Rio Pacuare (we booked the adventure transport through Gecko travel which is located at the hotel, it included pick up in Arenal, full day rafting and drop-off at Banana Azul - I can highly recommend it!). When... More

When we arrived we had originally booked the garden view room. We had loud upstairs neighbor and told the owner. He was so sweet and moved us to the treehouse apartment room which was amazing! Open air and separate living area and kitchen. The owner is very accommodating so let him or his staff know if you need anything at... More

We didn't stay here, but visited the restaurant & bar several times. We also used the beach area and rented bikes & a bodyboard. The staff and atmosphere were super friendly. Even if you don't stay here it is definitely worth visiting.

From the staff to the amenities, the grounds, and even the daily Chef's recommended dishes, everything was absolutely fabulous at the Banana. We stayed in the Howler Suite, with gorgeous ocean views (even from the bathroom shower) and the perfect wildlife-watching vantage point, as well. This is the best place to stay in the Puerto Viejo area without a doubt.... More

We spent our last three nights with Colin and his staff and were terribly dismayed when it came time to leave. We truly wish we had just skipped the tourist trap of Arenal Volcano and spent those days here in wonderland. We met some amazing people during our stay and came home more relaxed than I have ever been after... More

We visited Costa Rica the first week in June. Hotel Banana Azul was our destination and was/is a wonderful paradise...would venture to say that this is the number one place to stay in this area, near Puerto Viejo. The staff is caring and friendly, and the relaxed atmosphere is superb. The hotel itself is very nice with spacious accommodations and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
