I booked myself to stay 3 nights at the Escape Caribeno, but ended up staying only 2 due to personal reasons. It was a nice enough place about a 10 minute walk outside of town, fairly quiet, but nothing to write home about. Escape Caribeno is a very peaceful place in the lively small town of Puerto Viejo. It has a tropical garden with small cabins on one side of the road and beach front cabins with A/C on the other side. We stayed in the beach front cabin. We spent two night at the Escape Caribeno last month and it was a wonderful experience. Escape Caribeno is just slightly outside of "central" Puerto Viejo--within walking distance but quieter.
