Can't understand the positive reviews at all! We booked a double-room with shared bathroom and got the one next to the entrance. To be realistic, it's more a prisoncell than a room, extremely small. The blankets were smelly, when the lights went out there were roaches everywhere. Even worse, from the wooden roof some kind of insect-dirt (undefined) was falling... More

I spent several days at Casa Mariposa with Jill and John. I couldn't think of a better place to stay at while in Costa Rica. Their place is amazing! They are very kind and warm people who truly care about the visitors who stay with them. The atmosphere is amazing, and the surrounding area is second to none. I am... More

I put together a quick trip to climb Cerro Chirripo with my son, when his school and my work schedules aligned to allow us to head to Costa Rica. John and Jill keep updated information on Park Passes and with the help of Jane Tyrell, who ordered the park passes and arranged for transportation from San Jose (888 434 0776... More

Don't look for a place better than Casa Mariposa! Even if it's hard to get there, you will forget it once on top. The owners and their staff are so nice and helpful. It's the perfect place for relaxing before a hike to Chirripo or Cloud Bridge. The hostel is cosy and clean. I totally fell in love with this... More

The place is lovely situated at the edge of the national park. The owners are very nice and helpful. There is a big kitchen and clean common bathrooms. The only thing to critizise is that the private rooms are a bit noisy because the walls are quite thin.

Casa Mariposa is in a great location in order to do the Chirripo trek. Be warned however, this is not an easy place to get to (and I personally think they could be more transparent about this on their website). If you are coming by bus then plan accordingly (if you can afford it and it fits with your itinerary,... More

Dear Readers, Please note that the Chirripo permit policy has changed as of July 21, 2014. There are no longer walk-in tickets available, but there is a phone-in reservation system that works pretty well. It takes a bit of advanced planning but it saves everyone from the stress of queueing up for tickets. The prices for entrance and lodging have... More

Totally worth the walk to find this beautiful home. Such a relaxing location they have made the most of the surroundings with private gardens and a shower with a view. The shared area is comfortable and friendly and the pets are adorable. I think it was great how people go there for peace and respect each other's peace. It was... More

Located at the start of the Chirripo trail, this hostel makes for the ideal base camp before hiking up the mountain. Aesthetically, the lodge and rooms are really interesting and tuck into the mountain itself. Functionally, the hostel makes for a superb base camp by offering cold weather clothing like jackets, hats, and gloves (necessary), as well as a place... More

I recently stayed at this hostel before and after hiking Mt. Chirripo. The staff was extremely friendly and had a ton of information to give about climbing the mountain. They also were kind enough to lend out hats and gloves for those ill equipped for the cold weather. The hostel itself was very clean and had a very rustic/natural feeling.... More

I had the best time at Casa Mariposa! I didn't want to leave!! Jill and John were extremely welcoming and very accommodating. Their home is stunning with all natural designs/decorations. The place feels like a log cabin hideaway up in the mountains. I slept in the dorm on the rock platform. It was the most unique/natural/ beautiful room I have... More
