Pura Vida’s location just north of the city of Alajuela, its proximity to SJO, and its varying decent reviews prompted our selecting it for the beginning and ending accommodations of our visit to Costa Rica. We booked two days at the front end of our trip and two days before leaving. We arrived with level-headed expectations based on their website... More

Our reviewer has mixed feelings primarily due to his mother's response to the "terraced grounds being too much of a challenge to her balance and mobility". She was also not happy with our dogs nor the neighbors’ dogs. FYI our dogs do have the run of the grounds, sleep in the main Casa at night but are trained never to... More

My report is a little overdue, but we had a fantastic stay at Pura Vida! There were six of us for three nights at the beginning of our trip to CR in May. It was wonderful and relaxing to arrive at Pura Vida and be greeted so kindly by Berni and Rebecca. After settling in, we were given complimentary fresh... More

Our group of two adults and two teens stayed at the Hotel Pura Vida in April '08 as we were leaving Costa Rica and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay. From the moment we arrived we felt like we were at the gorgeous and expansive home of gracious friends. While we were settling in, complimentary fruit drinks arrived.... More

This was my third time staying at Pura Vida. My last trip to Costa Rica I had the pleasure and delight of ending my travels at this secret haven. It was the first booking I made for my adventure this time around. It truly feels as though your entering a secret garden of eden. Imagine your fist morning in Costa... More

Many great things to say. Be assured my review will not give enough praise to this gem hidden in the city of Alajuela. Giving a 5 of 5 rating for several reasons. Leading up to our booking, we read several reviews and couldn't find reason to choose any place other than Pura Vida. Its proximity to SJO (airport) was important... More

Using Fodor's Costa Rica 2008 guide book and acting on a suggestion of a friend to stay near the San Jose Airport, we selected Pura Vida hotel as our first, middle and last night's accomodations. The decision was perfect! The buildings, grounds and hospitality of the owners Berni and Nhi and their staff are delightful! Being on the outskirts of... More

We spent the first and last night of our trip in CR at Pura Vida. The hotel's location is excellent. It is a short and inexpensive taxi ride to/from the airport (the hotel pays for the taxi from the airport) and to downtown Alajuela. When we arrived in midafternoon, we were greeted by Rebecca, who knew exactly who we were... More

The Pura Vida was the perfect place to spend our first night in Costa Rica. We stayed in the Toucan Casita and had plenty of room. There was a living room and a bedroom with 2 twin beds and a queen and our family of 4 was very comfortable. The room was spotlessly clean with fresh flowers and had every... More

We arrived at the Pura Vida Hotel at 11pm and left at 8am the following morning so our experience there was limited but quite positive. We stayed in the Rainforest Casita, which was simply but nicely done with a huge, beautiful bathroom, cozy living area and king bed. The gardens on the grounds are gorgeous and it smelled so good... We stayed at the Pura Vida one night in February on our way back through San Jose from Arenal to Drake Bay. The co-owner, Berni quickly checked us in and escorted us to our room, the Mariposa, filling us in on the hotel information as we went. The room has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, sitting area and kitchenette. Furnishings were... More
