improvement in front office friendliness. there are still some staff that should not be here, but they are more at the back office. an employee called "bonnie" at the bar still does not say hello, thanks, please or good bye. another one called "coco" is perfect and professional. but there are new managers at the front desk that are now... A 100% hotel for business trip, nothing fancy and you will find all the basic need in here. Rooms are clean and size are OK. Not much greeting from staff but can’t say they are rude, price is good as compare to other hotels nearby. The best thing of this hotel is the location of it, very need to the... More

Perfect location in the middle or HuaiHai Road... . For those who love branded shopping, IAPM mall is just 2min walking distance from the hotel (eg: Gucci, Prada, MiuMiu, TODS, etc...) .... Metro station line 10 & line 1 are both within walking distance. YuYuan , NanJing Road, The Bund are around 4 - 5 stations away by metro.. Been... More

I use to stay in this Hotel everytime I'm in Shanghai. The Hotel is very clean and the rooms are good. Around the Hotel there are many restaurant and in any case if the preference it's to go to Bund, with 15/20minutes Taxi it's possible to go without huge expenses

The room and T&B are clean with complete toiletries. The gym is nice too. Food is really great- a lot of choices to choose from. Front desk people can speak English, which is very important for me who can't speak Mandarin. Just a few steps away from Huaihai Road and the subway station.

I have been staying at this hotel for about 8 years, each time I visit Shanghai for business. It hasn't changed much. It's clean, staff are pleasant and its a great location for me. For value for money it's getting a little dated and the breakfast quality seems to have dropped in recent visits. If you need to be in... More

Excellent location , served by 2 MRT lines. Surrounded by premium shopping malls and shopping street. Staff service level much to be desired. Check in staff without any greeting or gesture. Check out was slow only (it took 30 mins of queuing) manned by 2 staff (and need to answer enquiry at the same time) on a Sunday morning.

Located close to subway making it convenient to get to other attractions. Within walking distance to shopping complexes, restaurants and streets with small shops selling different kind of stuff from silk cheongsam to vintage clothing. This hotel is more towards business travellers however, if you are not fussy, quite comfortable for families. The room was clean, buffet spread was good.

I spent several weeks at the Howard Johnson. Very friendly and helpful staff, breakfast buffet wasn't too bad, standard rooms are standard. Location is great, really can't be beat for the price. Close proximity to both high end shopping (large new shopping mall practically next door), boutiques in the French Concession in walking distance and very convenient subway connections 1... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
