I stayed at Somerset XuHui for ten days over Xmas/NewYear 2015 in a 1 Br Executive Suite. I had earlier requested to be allocated a high floor apartment and Somerset responded by putting me in suite no. 2503 which was very satisfactory. (Thanks Somerset). The apartment was very nice and apparently newly renovated with everything virtually brand new. Kitchen/bathroom facilities... More

Our usual place of accommodation, as far as possible when we in Shanghai ! Near to metro line9, and station嘉善路 just across the street opposite hotel (2-3 minutes walk). There are lot of good restaurants nearby and can ask for delivery too, especially sometime we are busy to go out for lunch ! Only sit back is side gate is... More

Ever since we have our son and parents travel with us for holidays few years back, we choose to stay only in serviced apartment as it provides more space and more home-feel over a hotel room. And apartments under the Ascot group is always our first choice if it is available in the city that we travel. For our Shanghai... More

I would stay here over a hotel any day. Firstly, it feels like a much safer place, and although I'm Chinese (Canadian) and pretty used to the hustle and bustle of China, as a traveler it's nice to walk through a private driveway into a quieter neighbourhood. Beautiful front lobby area. Modern, has a nice sitting space and a coffee... More

The overall facility/room were a little outdated but nonetheless clean and comfortable. The price is very reasonable, especially when you are traveling with group of friends or as a family. I stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment, which the living area is a little small. Lack of bathtub was also a disappointment. (There is a bathtub in the 3 bedroom... More

I have stayed at the Somerset for 5 months. For the entire stay there were renovation works. It was very annoying, they would work even on the weekend, but at least they did notify me before I signed my contract. The room I rented was not renovated so it was not very new and clean but it was very big... More

I spent in this hotel 6 months (April-September 2015) while working in Shanghai. Apartment was well equipped with all the cutlery, dishes, bed linen, towels and washing machine etc. Wifi works fantastic after upgrade earlier this year. You don't even need vpn to access all foreign websites. They also provide good choice of tv channels for foreigners. It is a... More

Three friends and I spent about a week in Shanghai and stayed at the Somerset. Overall it was great - good location and excellent price for the size of our room. We booked a two bedroom unit through hotels.com and we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a three bedroom unit. The rooms are more like apartments than hotels... More

We stayed in a newly renovated two bedroom. It is nice. The staff is very helpful. The apartment is clean in spite of the work going on to renovate the other floors. There are a few annoyances with the renovation: no place to dry clothes, some of the cupboards in the kitchen cannot be opened due to appliances. Considering a... More

The location is ideal, within walking distance to Sun Moon Lake mall where restaurants are aplenty or the nearby Loft area which is just behind the apartment. It is also close by to Jiashan road, a charming street and leads down to Yongkang Road (nice cafe/bar area) and to mega mall iam/pm. And to donghu road, another area with cafe/bar.... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
