This is a solid hotel. It was a little hard to get to via taxi - so make sure you have the directions written down in Chinese. Once you're there, you realize how close it is to the Hengshan Subway stop on the 1 line. Solid breakfast buffet, basic gym, spacious and clean rooms. Location: It's a bit of a... More

This is an excellent hotel with friendly helpful staff and great service. Room was very clean and comfortable. Only slight negative is that breakfast was a little limited in choice but it was still OK. Its in a good location with plenty places to eat or get a drink in the local vicinity. There is also a Metro station near... More

Stayed here (still am, actually) for 3 weeks, in 2 different rooms, in October 2015 on a business trip. I travel frequently to China and Asia, for business as well as leisure. Anting Villa is a modestly charming but distinctly dated option. Pros: - Location in the French Concession is great. Metro is around the corner. Leafy, quiet (well, as... More

Our room was large and comfortable. There are nice street to walk in the French Concession. Our room was great however, one couple in our party was not in the main building and complained that the room was dirty and not nice. This is a big wedding hotel so we came back in the afternoon and the hotel was all... More

I actually liked this hotel quite well. The room was large and the bed comfortable. The location was good and the generally the staff were helpful I did have one incident when a front desk staff refused to serve me and I beleive because I was a westerner. The hotel is fairly new and the location is quite good in... More

There are plenty of places to stay in Shanghai so why should you come here? Firstly the neighborhood: its a real neighborhood, not trapped in the skyscraper jungle in Pudong or the malls and craziness closer to the center of town...a real neighborhood where real people live, two blocks from Hengshan Road metro station. And it's pretty and leafy, low key.... Clean, good location. Nice gardens. Breakfast sufficient. We travelled with 2 young children. Our son who is 3.5 years was called naughty by staff member because he was running (not in anyone's way or making noise) in the reception area as we checked in. Very much felt children were to be seen and not heard for entire stay! Would recommend... More

The hotel is really impressive when you arrive, the building itself is imposing, makes you think luxury and opulence. We had a HUGE family apartment, which had 2 bedrooms. The curtains were automated, just press a button to open or close them (wow!). The toilet was one of those Japanese ones that does lots of things (wash you, dry you,... More

What a lovely hotel. The breakfast in the restaurant was buffet style, both chinese and western food was on offer. There was also a chef on hand to cook eggs. The reception staff were welcoming but slightly limited in their English. Good selection of toiletries, replenished daily, rooms were clean and comfortable. when the toilet became blocked it was dealt... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
