There are plenty of places to stay in Shanghai so why should you come here? Firstly the neighborhood: its a real neighborhood, not trapped in the skyscraper jungle in Pudong or the malls and craziness closer to the center of town...a real neighborhood where real people live, two blocks from Hengshan Road metro station. And it's pretty and leafy, low key.... Clean, good location. Nice gardens. Breakfast sufficient. We travelled with 2 young children. Our son who is 3.5 years was called naughty by staff member because he was running (not in anyone's way or making noise) in the reception area as we checked in. Very much felt children were to be seen and not heard for entire stay! Would recommend... More

The hotel is really impressive when you arrive, the building itself is imposing, makes you think luxury and opulence. We had a HUGE family apartment, which had 2 bedrooms. The curtains were automated, just press a button to open or close them (wow!). The toilet was one of those Japanese ones that does lots of things (wash you, dry you,... More

What a lovely hotel. The breakfast in the restaurant was buffet style, both chinese and western food was on offer. There was also a chef on hand to cook eggs. The reception staff were welcoming but slightly limited in their English. Good selection of toiletries, replenished daily, rooms were clean and comfortable. when the toilet became blocked it was dealt... More

This is a great hotel, both for business and pleasure. Staff are friendly and fairly ok in English. Rooms are nice, and the hotel is located in a quiet neighborhood, so you can actually sleep at night. It´s a 10 min walk to Zhaojiabang metro station. However, the internet connection is very weak, so don't expect to sufr the internet... More

The hotel is perfectly located. Although it's 4 star but staff were very cooperative and welcoming. They had almost no knowledge of English but I could it make through Baidu translator. Rooms were small but perfectly decorated. Breakfast had limited choice but still sufficient.

My husband and I stayed here upon exiting Shanghai after living here. It was close to where we were living so it was an easy choice. Unsure of what to expect (Hotels that are aimed at the Chinese tourist/ business type clients can be hit and miss) we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly, efficient and spoke simple English... More

This hotel was a pleasant surprise for me and my colleagues. First of all - it is simply beatiful, and the first impression was: WOW. Second - it is well locatated: quite in a center of Shanghai, almost equidistant from both airports and a short walk to a metro line. The room was clean and convenient. Now to drawbacks: The... I have stayed at this Hotel many times over the last 7 years. It's now getting popular due to location and price. I stay here for business and its in a nice Garden area close to Line 1 Metro, which has great connections to both airports (Metro line to Maglev direct to PuDong) and also to line 11 direct to... This really is a standout hotel - and prices are so reasonable! It is located on a quiet street, just 5 minutes walk from Hengshan Street metro station (or 10 minutes from Zhaojiabang Rd). The hotel itself is set in beautiful spacious grounds. The room I had was a standard double room - reasonable size and very nicely appointed. A... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
