This hotel is pretty gross. The management photos for this hotel are pretty misleading. While nothing bad happened, I never actually felt totally safe here. There are no safes provided in the rooms for your belongings. I needed to leave all my camera and computer equipment in the room overnight without me being there, so I left WITHOUT leaving the... The place at first sight doesn't look terrible just a bit old. But once you stay in the room for a while things change fast. At the beginning I just thought it was old and a bit rundown, I don't have so much trouble with that. The problem is that the room was infested with cockroaches, moths, and other little... More

We looked at a lot of the reviews and it sounded fine for a budget hotel in a good area. However this was not at all the case. The whole hotel stunk. Not just of smoke but of mold. The rooms were dirty. Mold everywhere in the shower. Hard beds. Stains and dirt on the beds and carpet. We have... More

Decor of entire hotel is in dire need of updating. Probably hasn't been updated since the 1960s. Bathroom of my room was very moldy and just disgusting with its lack of cleanliness! Lighting was rather dingy. Reeptionist told me on check-in that she had given me the "best room"! If you're contemplating this hotel, the only thing going for it... More

We chose this hotel because the location is convenient according to the reviews. We booked the Business King Room. We were disappointed the room was small and it was Queen bedded not King bedded. The fridge and microwave oven were not working. The reception staff were unfriendly and not helpful. We did not bother so much as we just stayed... More

My colleagues and I used this hotel on two occasions and each time we came away disappointed. The check-in staff were unfriendly and sullen. They stuffed up our reservations that we had made online. We were offered breakfast as part of the online deal but they denied it and we had to pay for our own breakfasts. Which was just... More

Great location by People's Square and Nanjing Road and a short walk to the Bund. Rooms are ageing though and the bathroom especially needed a good scrub. Many rooms look into the inner courtyard where there was a weeding the night we stayed, so not the best if you've just arrived Shanghai, jet lagged and needing some sleep. Good enough... More

the hotel are located near to Nanjing Road (Shopping ~ 5 mins walk), The bung (Attraction ~ 25 mins walk) & Yu Garden (Attraction ~30 mins walk). I would said it is the cheapest 3 star hotel you can get in this area. The hotel is not so bad, just a bit old and not well maintained. If you are... More

We are world travelers, retired and on a budget. We rate budget hotels. We expect problems and understand the balance of budget vs service. We stayed at the Charms Hotel in Shanghai. It is rated 3 stars. We stayed 9 days. Pluses. The hotel is centrally located and walking distance to all major attractions. Lots of nice artwork around the... More

Staying in People’s Square

Neighborhood Profile
People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.
