Great location but it could be considered expensive bearing in mind the status of the building and service. Views to the city are quite dissapointing. Showers are too old. Part of the staff wasn't too friendly. Breakfast it's too expensive. No Internet in the rooms nor in the hall. It clearly needs a deep refresh.

There was no problem with the room I was provided. It was cleaned well and the wifi signal from my room was strong. However, the staff needs to be retrained in hotel management, and a little bit more English. I was unable to understand the receptionist at check out when she said "we won't be going back to you." After... More

Considering its location, The Seagull on the Bund is a decent hotel for people who are on a budget. The nearest metro station is East Nanjing Road, which is about 15 minutes away from the hotel. That would seems like long distance to walk off but by doing so you can catch a glimpse of the bund on the way,... More

The hotel itself was very nice, and a good location close to The Bund and a 15 minute walk to the train (subway) station. The room (and a co-worker said the same about his) was very damp. There was even mold around the AC vent, assuming due to the dampness. Towels would not dry, my passport even "curled" due to... More

We got suckered into the 9th floor as it was the highest floor available which we wanted for the view over the Bund, however the reality of the uncomfortable beds only struck at bedtime which was an unfortunate experience which we got the hotel to remedy in the morning by moving us to the 8th floor. For views of the... More

This hotel looks better on the Internet than in reality. The rooms themselves are ok but the bathrooms are very much in need of an update. Surprisingly language was a real issue and whilst we didn't expect great English, communicating with staff was very difficult. Wifi only available in lobby and not great. Sat in bar area as at least... More

The hotel has a great location. I had a great view onto the skyscrapers to the Pudong side. The hotel room was more or less clean. Wifi was only in the lobby available! The saddest thing on this hotel is the service/friendliness of the hotel employee. All persons at the reception where very unfriendly, not helpful and had a lack... More

for a trip of 3 or 4 days is a good option. However there is no wifi in the rooms and the front desk staff services are very poor. The rooms are big enough, but they don't clean them well. i would rather go to another hotel in the area even paying a little bit more.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2015

We stayed 1 night in April 2015. Reception was pleasant and quick. The room however felt very dated with decor looking decidedly out of fashion with mismatching fittings and old faded fabrics. It was clean and is well located but the lack of wifi was too much to bear. We didn't sample any food here. Personally I would search for... More

I stayed at this hotel for six incredibly uncomfortable nights. The hotel is has-been luxury property in desperate need of a complete makeover. The property is old and poorly maintained. Traveling on a budget, I opted for one of their more affordable rooms--a big mistake! The room was windowless, however, nonetheless, there were tons of flying bugs in the room... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
