One of my hobbies and pastime is to stay at least 1 night at historic hotels wherever and whenever I business travel. There were and are a number of "old Hotels" in Shanghai - Peace Hotel, Astor Hotel (the old Richard Hotel), etc. Several were restored to past glories by international label chains - Waldorf Astoria, Intercon Ruijin, Fairmont Peace... Greeting to a dismayed traveler, I understand how you must have felt. The Metropole opened in 1931, in all her then glory I believe; and now has closed summer 2014. We have closed this historic landmark for a total refurbishment inside, top to bottom. When the hotel reopens refreshed and new again in spring 2016, we will be a part... More

Although it is easy to be seduced by the attractive foyer, a trip to you room will reveal how this once attrctive hotel has been allowed to decline through lack of maintenance and greed. It is the only hotel (of seven this trip) that did not offer drinking water inclusive of the room rate but sold it as an extra,... More

Background: Opened in 1930, the historic Metropole Hotel was a hotel owned by the famous Sir Ellice Victor Sassoon, a British baron, businessman and hotelier from the Sassoon banking family. He lived in Shanghai as a wealthy bon vivant who worked tirelessly to protect Western interests in the Orient. Founding the Sassoon House (now Peace Hotel), Sassoon was taking Shanghai... More

Let's start with the good. This hotel is in a beautiful Art Deco building and is in an excellent central location. However I knew things weren't off to a good start when before I even got in the front door the local pimp was offering me good prices on a "sexy massage" with a beautiful Chinese lady. Then there was... More

The hotel has a good location. It is very close to the bund and a metro station was also right around the corner. The room was large but very old. Some furnitures were broken, no safe and in addition the power plug in the bathroom wasn't working. Overall an average experience.

I arrived at the hotel and was struggling to get my bags up the front stairs and a woman working at the hotel just stood there talking on her cell phone and did not even acknowledge me. Then I went to check in and the man at the front desk did not understand when I said check in. It took... More

We chose the J.J. Metropole Hotel mostly because of its location and stayed there for 8 nights (check-in: July, 6 2013). This historic hotel (1930s architecture) is located at the junction of Fuzhou and Jiangxi Roads and is a 5-minute walk from The Bund and the shopping belt of Nanjing Road. People's Square is a 20-minute walk away, East Nanjing... More

After having a few problems with our hotel in Beijing we had very sceptic thoughts about cheap Chinese hotels. But we found this hotel to be very good standard for the price we have paid. Good size room with fantastic air-con and a fridge. Smooth and efficient check in and check out. Staff at the reception responded promptly to all... More

What can I say about the Metropole. Well it's a very expensive bog standard 3 star hotel for which they charge £68.00 (roughly) per night in a standard room. Rooms are clean enough and hallways etc are well kept, however, definitely not worth the amount charged on the door. The service isn't brilliant and there aren't too many staff that... More
