My husband and 2 kids stayed in New Century for 7 nights, the word "New" is very misleading. The lobby smelled like smoke due to cigarettes, the carpet in the hallways were very dirty, and the bathroom had mold in the corners. The breakfast buffet was average and definitely was not something you would want to eat for 7 days... More

The grand lobby does not live up to its promise. Breakfast was a total shambles on a busy morning because of lack of seating, poor quality food and even worse service. It gave a glimpse of Communist era attitudes. When I asked where the spoons were, a woman behind a counter just pointed to the middle distance. The bread and... More

This review is part of our tour of China which we booked and arranged through China Direct (www.chinadirect-travel.co.uk) and travelled during 12th to 26th October 2009. Part of the package was that we always had a tour guide and taxi at our disposal, were met at all our destinations, transported to hotels and also then picked up and taken to... More

This hotel is dreadful and we cannot recommend it to anyone. We also stayed here for two nights at the end of a two-week tour of China. Check-in was chaotic and slow. The hotel insists that you provide your passports but we had to struggle to get them back even several hours later. Our room was disgusting. It smelled of... More

This was our last two night stop on a two-week tour of China, and it was the worst experience by a long way. The hotel itself is quite an impressive building with spacious lobbies and great potential. However, the fabric of the place is showing fatigue and the day to day management is laughable for a hotel claiming to be... More

We stayed here for 2 nights. The lobby is immaculate and stunning to say the least. The lifts are very confusing. If you happen to be on floors 11 or above then you have to catch the far lifts or go to floor 11 and then change lifts. Very confusing at first. The bedrooms were ok but a little on... More

Stayed in the hotel for 3 days. The lobby looks abit old style, but overall its still ok. The lobby lounge is good with not so many people during the night. Can have a quiet moment, relaxing and enjoying the pianist playing music. The rooms are tidy and clean. Quite simple layout. However, on the second day, i put out... More

checkin ok, front desk staff ok, but the rooms , stayed in 2 different ones, are tired, old furniture, moldy caulking in the bathroom, patched carpeting and poor lighting. The breakfast room is old and the service was poor.

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
