This early 20th century mansion was said to have been built in the style of a fairy tale castle, and it certainly exudes a kind of magical charm. Our room was on the small side, but comfortable. Staff was helpful, and there was a good variety of Western and Chinese options at breakfast. My wife particularly enjoyed the bread pudding,... More

I am careful in the words I choose when reviewing a property here on Tripadvisor, and I stand behind the title of my review of the Moller Villa in Shanghai. It is presented online as a quaint old hotel, a throwback to Shanghai's roaring 20's past. That is misleading, because in reality the hotel is characterized by poor physical maintenance... More

The Hotel Moller was a pleasant surprise in downtown Shanghia. From the grand entrance at checking the scale of this villa is impresssive. The facility, while a little worn in places is a very comfortable and impressive place. The overall feel is much more relaxing and comfortable than one of the mighty chain towers from brands that we all know.... More

The hotel is like an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of the big city! Our room was beautifully appointed. The buffet breakfast had a terrific selection of Asian and Continental foods. The front desk staff was the BEST! Very helpful and patient! I would recommend this hotel for business or pleasure! It was a great experience!

I was in Shanghai for my sister's wedding and stayed here because the rest of the family had chosen this hotel. It is an old mansion in the middle of the city. Everything seems to be the same as it was when the Moller family lived there. The gardens are prestine and the breakfast buffet was a great mixture of... More

I had to run to Shanghai on a family emergency. This hotel was beautiful, comfortable, clean and became my home away from home for nearly three weeks. The room rate includes breakfast, and what a breakfast! You have a choice every day of Chinese food, British food, omelette station, etc. I never tired of the food and the service was... More

I paid over $450 for the so called "the best suite" in the hotel for a night and what we got? 1. The staff never smiled. 2. There was only one bathrobe in the room. I called the receptionist for one more, but it never came. 3. The facilities in the room (decoration, shower, telephone, toiletries, etc) were out of... More

The hotel is an interesting old property, with the modern changes made in keeping with it's old school theme. the dining room and grounds, giving the feel of living in another era. Staff are friendly and helpful (though their english is limited), the rooms are clean and well kept and the location works for shopping and is close to the... More

Do not stay here unless you want to pay over the odds for a dirty hotel with poor service and no concept of business travel assistance. Very expensive and insects in the rooms. Awful service I had a poor check in and check out all of the front desk staff seem unable to understand much English and do not know... More

I had booked 2 nights at the hotel at the end of a business trip in Shanghai. The problems started at check in, when the ladies at reception wanted me to pay a big deposit upfront, on my credit card. The room they put me in was tiny, and not very clean. What I didn't know is that the hotel... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
