Astor House was built in 1846 and touted as the "oldest western hotel in China," The Astor House, which since I was here last 5 years ago, had outgrown all recognition. It has undergone quite some renovation work over the years, it maintains its unique neo-classic style of historical architecture. We still regret though that once such a great hotel does... More

Rude and Unfriendly staff, creaking floors and dirty hallways left a bad taste in our mouth. Rooms were good and this hotel is walking distance to The Bund, a major tourist attraction in Shanghai. I would rather pay a bit more and stay away from this dump. Even our guide was appalled by front desk rudeness. No I would not... More

This property is described as the first "Western Style" hotel in China and the building dates back to 1846. It looks as if not a lot has been done to it since, apart from installing a few elevators! The lobby café is a disgrace; the carpets and most of the common areas are tired and decrepid; the hotel's Wi-Fi is... More

Rooms vary from area and floor, in style and view, so be clear with your choice. For personal reasons I changed rooms and they were quite different and for almost the same price, the best one was even cheaper. GREAT location Also consider that staff is not (always) English fluent and, although Shanghai is a cosmopolitan city, China is not... More

The hotel is too old, it needs to be upgraded. Upon arrival they gave us a standard room while we reserved a studio at the top floor. After some complains they finally gave us the room we payed for. Overall I didn't like this hotel, definitely too old and not well maintained. The location is perfect, downtown, just 2 steps... More

OK let's start with the good. Star 1. Location. Can't be beaten. Views of the financial district skyscrapers. Close walk to the Bund. Star 2. History. Dozens of old photos around the corridors and open spaces explaining the part this hotel has played with Shanghai's history. "The room President Grant stayed" etc. Star 3. Hotel building. Has that lovely oldy... More

The Astor House is a very Impressive hotel both in public areas and rooms. Bedding was turned down in the evening and tidied in morning while we were at breakfast, which was served in ballroom, and had extensive range. The room we had was very 'national trust' rather than 'coach party' style as described elsewhere. I have been to 'coach... More

We stayed at the Astor House Hotel for 3 nights during our visit to Shanghai in March 2015.This wonderful old hotel, famous in the early 20th Century has been beautifully restored. It is located to the north of the Bund just over the bridge across Suzhou Creek. A great location for exploring the city, although it is about 30 mins... More

We booked this hotel on the recommendation of friends. They told me that I would love it as it was just like stepping into an Agatha Christie novel, and I did love it! A beautiful old hotel that oozed old world charm. The room we had on the top floor was spacious, quiet and had a decent sized bathroom. The... More

I stayed here on my own for 6 nights and it was in the most wonderful location. You can easily walk to the Bund in a couple of minutes. Taxis on the most part were plentiful but obviously it depends on what time of day. Quite a few drivers seemed to stop there for a break! The hotel is the... More
