The hotel had a certain charm but it looked like it was in its prime 50 years ago. We were greeted by a very grumpy check in staff member. we then made our way to our room and ordered room service the food was horrific. the pizza. utterly inedible. our room was clean but a little weather beaten. fast forward... We booked two double rooms. Our children got a spacious old room with two kingsize beds. We however were allocated to a very old room with no windows in the dark backside of the hotel with an ancient Chinese bed just big enough for two midgets. Long protesting did not get us another room because the hotel "was fully booked".... More

My third stay in this historic hotel. I stayed again in the room where Albert Einstein stayed in 1921 when he heard that he'd won the Nobel Prize for Physics. I hoped some of his aura woould rub off on me. The hotel is very grand and was once the top hotel in Shanghai, if not in the whole of... More

If you love the most modern of suites - super attentive staff - have a special diet - expect everything to run like clockwork and are rather OCD this place is not for you. Love history ,character quirks and faded grandeur this will be perfect. Fantastic locatation yards from the Bund - not a bad price for Shanghai - room... More

Hotel has full of historical relics back to the early 1900s. There are photographs of the old shanghai along the hotel corridors . I presume the hotel is not suitable for children as need to walk a short distance before you get to the lifts. However recommended to travelers who loves classic hotels

The location of the Astor House just can't be beat. It is right on the river at the bridge crossing the Bund - the most beautiful view in Shanghai. The hotel is an old beauty but it is old. President Grant stayed there so you know it's old! You can see the grandeur as you walk in the lobby but... More

We flew in from Chicago and boy were our arms tired! Honestly though, we were exhausted, turned around and a little nervous about being in Shanghai. We were so happy the minute we walked into the Astor House. Sure, maybe it's a grand dame who's lost some of her shine, but my goodness! What a historic place. Our room was... More

Although most rooms don't have a view towards the bund, the location is unbeatable. Just cross the bridge and you are right at the bund. Prices are very reasonable for Shanghai standards. The Hotel itself has quite some history. Unfortunately it seems to need an urgent update. Of course the antique interior is part of the charm, but some of... More

I just finished a five-night stay here and loved it. As long as I can get a room, it's where I'll stay every time I'm in Shanghai. The primary reasons I give it five stars are: location and price. It is in a stellar spot, on the north side of the Bund, across the beautiful iron bridge. And while it's... More

Astor House was built in 1846 and touted as the "oldest western hotel in China," The Astor House, which since I was here last 5 years ago, had outgrown all recognition. It has undergone quite some renovation work over the years, it maintains its unique neo-classic style of historical architecture. We still regret though that once such a great hotel does... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
