I chose to stay at the Astor for its historic charm - and it didn't disappoint. I hope at some point soon that it will be restored to it's prior glory (and not torn down). When we checked in, we asked the woman working at the front desk if we had a nice room. Her response was, "It is the... More

We stayed for 4 nights, the price for the room is good, the location is good, but the staffs and Service is very bad I have written to then directly and waiting for a response. We were given an executive room, the room smelled of paint and varnish. The room was adequate and Functional apart from the TV. We had... More

Conveniently located, just cross a bridge and you're at the Bund, this hotel is a must. I got a sense of what would have been to come to Shanghai in the 1910s or 1920s. Just loved it. Our room was gigantic for today's standards. Bed sheets and pillows at 5 star hotel level. The breakfast room is just precious. You... More

Good location at north end of the Bund. Great sense of history, especially in the public areas and the 12 foot ceilings in the rooms. Not all parts are immaculately historically accurate. However, quite affordable compared to other historical hotels in the area. Bed was firm but not rock-like. Rooms clean; no smell of smoke. Breakfast isn't much to talk... More

A real mixed bag of pros and cons but ultimately there were too many cons for a higher rating. We arrived at the Astor House Hotel and loved it immediately. It's very grand inside and we loved the size and decor of the room. Our luggage was brought up for us by one of the amazingly helpful doormen, five minutes... More

great location at end of the Bund and if you like history and character, you will love the Astor House. Sure, she needs a bit of a nip&tuck in some parts, but the rooms have all been renovated- totally modern with period decor- nicely done! save some time for exploring the nooks and crannies, and the ballroom has its own... Visit this hotel because of its wonderful location (almost directly on the Bund) and its unique historical classy atmosphere. Our room was spacious but basic and overall it has a nice touch of lost glory, a longing for another time now gone. The restaurant and bar are horribly overpriced but overall it has a great value-for-money.

Former top of the bill hotel in Shanghai. Completely declined after Japanese war and Mao's reign. Since 2002 renovation started and a lot of the grandeur is back already. However pricing is still very affordable. Location is among the best possible in Shanghai. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Staff is friendly and helpful. I guess their biggest challenge to become... More

Astor House is history, but needs some maintening works. PRO: the location, in the centre of Shanghai; the room: quite big; the price CON: we were 4, but there were 3 beds, 2 king size and 1 standard; the receptionists don't know english in a decent way

Great location, 100 m from the Bund, and a lot of history. Rooms in a strange way have not really changed in 100 years , old polished wood floors , just that there is now a good ensuite bathroom . Very reasonable priced rooms , shame I did not have time to explore all of the floors

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
