The point about this hotel is that it is part of the colonial history of Shanghai. If you like modern accommodation this hotel is not for you; but if you are interested in the history of Shanghai it is well worth a visit. There is a fascinating 'museum' display room in the hotel with a number of exhibits and displays... More

Throughly enjoyed our stay on the Bund at the Astor House Hotel. Stuffed with lots of history & character, the hotel exudes a heir of a Victorian time period, where you can feel the history come alive. We were lucky enough to stay in the same room as Albert Einstein, Rm 304. He stayed there in 1922 where he learned... More

Stayed here for two nights. Great location but as a hotel it's tired. The first room we were given was to say the least worn out but as we had pre booked and paid we had no choice but to ask for a different room. The next room was much better but was still nothing to get excited about. The... More

So I was a solo traveller and booked a room here because of the history. It was a bit creepy - very old school looking. I felt like I was on the Titanic. My room was huge and was comfortable, a bit odd and in the corner. They have a museum which is kinda fun but it definitely felt old.... More

We had a 19 hour layover in Shanghai so needed a place to stay. From the airport we took the Maglev to its stop and then subways to East Nanjing rd. Over all it took quite a bit of time to get to the hotel using this method. Once at the hotel we were impressed with the lobby, very nice!... More

We stayed at Astor House Hotel for one week in November. We didn't want to stay in one of the big chains and chose Astor House Hotel looking for character and charm. We were SO pleased with this hotel! It's a grand old lady with gorgeous ornate decoration. Our "Richard room" was spacious, comfortable and well appointed. Bathroom was very... More

Excellent hotel. Nice ambiance. Good English speaking staff. I was happy to have chosen this hotel. Steeped in history, this gives the glimpse of English era and style of early days. I would like to stay in this hotel again. Location is excellent.

This grand old lady of Shanghai (150 years old) brings you back to the a past life. The wooden floors, huge rooms, excellent location all perfect when walking up and down the bund. The beds are very comfortable and the breakfast in the ballroom was straight from a movie set. Staff were friendly - no complaints with this hotel

I had a room at the back of the building. Room was large with wooden floors, worn wallpaper, but reasonably new furniture. Bathroom was large, no bath, only shower, tiles as tired as wallpaper. I like hotels with character, but some of the character at the Astor House Hotel appeared to be at the expense of investment in maintenance. There... More

The Astor House Hotel was an excellent hotel to stay in Shanghai China. Not only did the hotel offer an excellent location, with walking distance to the "Bund" but very clean nostalgic rooms. Additionally, the staff was very helpful with luggage storage the day of check-out and they offered a very elegant breakfast. There was no language barrier as the... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
