We had booked a normal room, but upon arrival they offered us a better room for a rather competitive rate. Unfortunately the standard room they showed us (maybe one of the less pretty ones to persuade us) was rather depressing, very worn and old. The Business suites have a window to the bedroom along the whole length of the bathroom,... More

The hotel is quite nice, with this 19th century look, huge corridors and rooms, marble and drapes. It's located at 5 minutes walk from the Bund, but the nearest subway stations are not so near (15 minutes). The room was clean and very big, the bed comfortable. The staff, alas, was not very kind. The check in process looked like... More

I stayed there only one day, but I should say, the hotel is not so good as you can think looking through photos. Two major problems -- disgusting soundproofing and not very tasty and varied Breakfast. The first problem is very much hindered--lived in 618 room and the Elevator was not allowed to sleep until 1am. Also heard my neighbors... More

This is a rather old Hotel right at the confluence of the Wusong and Huangpu Rivers. It is very comfortable, with hepful staff. Breakfast is over priced and quite Western, but the location is worth everything. You can walk to the Bund in a few minutes over an old bridge across the Wusong that offers stellar views of the Pudong... More

I have to say that from the moment you step into the place and walk down the halls of the hotel you really feel as though you are going back in time. Its like staying in an old Victorian mansion complete with the ballroom now used for weddings. The location is perfect to explore Shanghai with a very short walk... More

Prior reviews were very helpful so I'll add my 2 cents--great location; some wear, but this IS an old hotel; buffet breakfast is quite good; cleanliness is obviously a priority. I stayed in the Grant Room and was quite happy there. Although there is no view, it is blissfully quiet after the city noise. The room is huge and boasted... More

This is an extensive, renovated hotel with timber floors, huge rooms, and an old-fashioned luxury style. You could spend half a day just taking photos of the hotel, its corridors and rooms. Einstein and Russell stayed there - although not at the same time. The staff were very helpful and spoke acceptable English. There was excellent free wifi in the... More

Dear guest,The Astor House Hotel is a distinguished gathering place for both Chinese and foreign political figures, as well as well-known celebrities. Dignitaries such as Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Russell, and Zhou Enlai, have all stayed at this hotel. The Astor House Hotel is a place where Chinese culture and western civilization converged. The first electric lamp, the first telephone,... More

I was hesitant at first since the location was over a bridge from the Bund but it really is only a few minute walk from the main area. It's at the end of the road which means it's not crowded at night, but everything is still accessible. The waterfront has a great walkway for jogging in the morning and walking... More

I just spent a week at the Astor House hotel and had a wonderful experience. I've read other reviews that complained that the hotel is showing signs of wear and tear, and that is definitely true in some ways. But it's the oldest "Western" hotel in Shanghai, and it has charm for days. I stayed on the 2nd floor (only... More

Stayed here for 3 nights whilst in Shaghai. The location is very handy, close to the Bund, an easy walk. Walked to the Bund at night to see the lights across the river, felt safe and you are back at the hotel less than 5min from the Bund. The rooms themselves are clean, quite large, bed was comfortable, and it... More
