Stunning. Wonderful. Old Asia in all its glory. Most of the six floors have remained untouched while a couple have been fully refurbished to a very high standard. Amazingly long, rambling, teak-lined corridors; small bars and restaurants; very friendly and generally obliging staff; excellent buffet breakfasts; the celebrity rooms are just marvellous - one is right back in the Victorian... more

We stayed at the hotel about a week in the cheapest room available (not in the celebrity rooms). Hotel was built in the 1800 century so it has it's own, old charm. You can feel the age but in the positive way. The room was really spacious, very clean and one of the best equiped rooms we have been to.... more

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights after having pre-booked and pre-paid our accomodation using a hotel booking website. As is standard practice in virtually every hotel, we were asked to provide my credit card so they could hold some funds in case of extra room charges. Upon check out, we paid for two mineral waters... more

We loved our stay at the Astor House Hotel. Check-in was easy. (We had pre-booked through Travelocity.) Our Executive Suite was huge, clean, and beautifully done-up. The service, though sometimes abrupt, was prompt. The in-room computer was slow, but adequate for routine emailing. The breakfast was sumptuous. The building is beautiful, inside and out, and it's hard to beat the... more

Stayed @ the hotel 3 nights. A colonial stylish hotel. The gloy of the past versus the super modern city on the outside - ceates a special atmospher. We chose the Richard Executive Room which was spacious with a large bathroom connected to the room by a glass wall & free internet + breakfast. The room was colonial /stylish with... more

One of Shanghai's fine old hotels. The kilted bellboys were very helpful, service was good and breakfast fabulous. more

Stayed for just one night on a short visit to Shanghai and found this hotel to be full of character with comfortable rooms and a good breakfast buffet. Rooms facing the front where a little noisy due to constant traffic but the bed was comfortable and we slept well despite the noise. Our tariff gave us access to the club... more

Astor House hotel (Formerly Richard’s Hotel) has character being the first “European” type hotel built in 1846. There are many types of bedrooms. You might want to visit one first to view the situation and road noise conditions. The “Executive” style room I had faced Huang Pu Road and the Russian Consulate. It was large and clean. The hotel and... more

As previous reviewers have said, the Astor House hotel has tons of character and bedrooms are massive (we stayed in a Richards Executive room) and furnished in a stately although slightly worn, style. It was useful to have a computer in the room, although actual internet access was sporadic. Staff spoke good English but helpfulness varied from very helpful (when... more

The hotel is in a good location for walking out onto The Bund – shame though that The Bund is one massive construction site at the moment. The staff were friendly and spoke good English. The bedroom was huge and the bed seemed lost in the middle. The bedroom and bathroom were both very clean. There was a fair bit... more
