In the old part of Shanghai, Okura Garden hotel stands proudly with its high building, high Japanese standards and high pricing on a lovely and expensive market street. During the early years of its existence, the building interiors should seem as if they were out of "royal" specifications. You can easily determine that even table lighting equipment is unique and... The Okura Garden hotel is in the middle of the most picturesque part of Shanghai, the former French Concession, which is full of little shops and restaurants, and fun to wander around. It is a smoothly run business hotel with more than 20 storeys of well-sized rooms (for Shanghai) in a modern tower block. The main building (where you check... More

Good location, beautiful garden. Some friendly staff. Nice pool/ sauna area. Nice breakfast variety. Only disappointment was that the bathrooms were a bit old and cramped. And room decor needs an update. Also +1 breakfast costed ¥200?!?!

We arrived late and left early but it was enough to be very disappointed of this hotel. The room was not nice, on top I got a smokers room that smelled horrible and the bed was very bad. Not coming back here After having tried many other alternatives for business trips in Changchun this is my new favorite place in... More

Hotel rooms and wellness facilities well maintained, location close to great restaurants and stores. Value for money if you book online. Breakfast buffet commendable. Make sure you include the breakfast option when you book your room online, as the price will almost triple if you just walk into their restaurant.

I had a tremendous experience at Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai. The staffs were incredibly thoughtful and attentive, and the room had a lot of unexpected comforts. It was really all about the details - the toiletries (amazing!), the soft towels smelling faintly of fabric softener, the bedding and mattress (so comfortable), the Japanese toilet seat, the traditional tea set, and... When I'm in shanghai Okura Garden is my favorite hotel. Very professional people, good breakfast and close to interesting place in downtown. You can walk to reach some good restaurant and fashion mall. The garden inside the hotel is fantastic!!!!!

Great location and a property type with huge potential (garden, traditional building, etc). Instead it is completely mismanaged and facilities are left to deteriorate. Service is a disaster, rooms are old and basic, only plus point are the scrambled eggs on the breakfast buffet (for some reason, only japanese know how to make those properly in asia). I will not return... More

The Garden Hotel is a western-tourist friendly hotel in the former French Concession area of Shanghai. Very convenient to the Huai hai Road shopping area, with a beautfiul garden and very nice rooms. Okura is situated very well, close to many historical attractions. Its adjacent garden is a real treat. The hotel itself is nicely designed in a traditional style. The lobby housed in a former french mansion is beautiful. The room was sparkling clean. Staff was helpful and attentive. The only downside is breakfast: it is not geared towards western habits and... Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
