The best feature of the hotel is its location in the Bund area of Shanghai. The hotel is fairly dated in its styling and decor. The check-in is time consuming and you get the sense that you have to bargain alot for the better rooms which they dont want to give out to you. They will try and keep you... More

The location of the hotel is superb. Next to people square. Everything very close shopping sightseeing bund area indian restaurants. Rooms are not very big. Breakfast is so so. Only problem is getting taxi and the conceirge is also not very active to help you get taxi. This is the biggest drawback of this hotel.

Rooms were very clean but small and dated. There's no place to unpack so don't stay here if you are in Shanghai for an extended period of time. It's a great location but the staff at the front desk and the doormen are useless. The beds are VERY hard. Very disappointing service for a 4 star hotel.

This hotel was in a good central location within 5 minutes walk of People's Square, shopping street of Nanjing road and two metro stations. The rooms were nicely furnished, clean and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was huge with great variety. They could do with having a nice bar area but doesn't seem to be common in China. Pool and sauna... More

Great location across the street from Nanjing Rd. and 20 minute walk to the Bund. Beautiful lobby, well furnished and clean rooms. I recommend getting a suite. If you do, don't plan on someone sleeping on the sofa because it won't be big enough (it's a loveseat). Pay for breakfast with your room or negotiate it free otherwise you'll pay... More

My Worst ever travel experience in my life. Air con is not working well and staffs are rude and not making any effort to solve the problem. The staffs told me that there is nothing they can do. In addition, the hotel had no electricity in the middle of the night. Strongly not recommended to stay.

Visited Shanghai at the end of our 2 week trip to China and were thoroughly impressed. Our group of 14 needed accommodation within a budget and the Howard Johnson didn't disappoint. Located within walking distance of Nanjing Road and easy access to Subway, we were a short walk down to the Bund. The hotel has all facilities of 4/5 star... More

Took Mrs M the daughter and the Mother in law (good ain,t I) on two short cruises from Shanghai(long story) .Stayed here in the middle bit. Top location right on the square on Nanjing Road. Right in the centre of everything. Hotel very much like most others of its star rating for China. Comfortable and clean. Didn,t use the restaurant... More

Nothing to complain about here...... Location good, room clean and a decent size, shower clean and powerful and breakfast really comprehensive. Cold public area in a cold spell when we were there and a little lacking in atmosphere. That said, would definitely stay again.....

My wife and I spent a night at the Howard Johnson Plaza, Shanghai earlier this week, at the end of a very hectic but hugely memorable tour of China. The hotels we had stayed in over the previous 2 weeks were consistently comfortable and enjoyable, so it was really disappointing to end our trip on a rather sorry and disappointing... More
