8 Art Hotel is in a great location just 50m from the Bund at Yan'An Road, the reception area and restaurant look great and some of the rooms are nice too. The roof top looks really nice and would be a nice place to relax in summer (no Bund view). This is unfortunately were the good review ends. As said... More

Very reasonable for the location, boutique artsy style hotel. A stone's throw from the Bund. Breakfast included in the rate was fine to start the day. Coffee very good. Nice small patio for sitting out and eating breakfast!. Rooftop bar area is so cool. Nice for doing stretches (tai chi!) in the early morning. Staff are friendly. Would definitely stay... More

I had the opportunity to stay at the hotel for two nights, and it was a great stay. First and foremost, the hotel is located in a very vibrant area of the city, close to the Bund, Yu Gardens, and Nanjing Road, which is very nice. The lobby and hallway areas were very clean & well decorated. The rooms themselves... More

This hotel room is nicely designed with ambient environment and earthy feel. The rooms are well equipped with WiFi, air conditioning and TV. I spent multiple nights here and loved their morning open buffet breakfast to start my day. At night I loved coming back to the rooftop and meditate away from city noise. The rooms were clean and romantically... More

We had a pleasant two night stay in the hotel. The decoration of the lobby and the restaurant with it's different stylish, interesting furnituries gives a contemporary atmosphere. Our room was clean but furnished without any style at all or decoration. The floor was linoleum peeling of some places. The window looked into the coridor that made the room noisy and... More

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Positives: Very well located, attentive staff. sheets and towels are clean comfortable and well smelling. Negatives: Poor maintenance, no comfort, neglected, breakfast horrible. The rooms are small, cleaning is poor. I would not recommend to anyone.

Sorry that you did not have good experience last time. We are located right on the bund, thus rooms are small. Our cleaning ladies are trained on a weekly basis to ensure each room is thoroughly and carefully cleaned. We now have a new French Food and Beverage manager taking care of the breakfast and all day meal in the... More

First of all: the hotel is now called THE EIGHT ART HOTEL. I spend in this hotel on a Sunday night during a short trip to Shanghai. What I liked: 1. The location. Walking distance to the Bund and Nanjing Road. 2. The lobby / entrance and bar area are really art focused and boutique style. The rooms however have... More

I stayed there for over 2 weeks in Shanghai. Now named The Eight Art Hotel, it seems to have been recently renovated. It looks very contemporary, with a nice restaurant, bar and cafe on the first floor. Despite not all the staff speak English, they were still able to help me with my questions and concerns. They made my arrival... More

We stayed at this hotel for two nights in mid July and the location was fantastic. Also the room was clean and the bathroom good. However the rooftop bar no longer was working-it would have been a fantastic place for a drink-and management was haphazard. In fact, when we arrived, at first they denied any knowledge of our booking through... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
