There are plenty of great hotels in Shanghai that will offer you immaculate rooms, great views and all mod cons - no different from most cities in the world. What they don't give you is a sense of being part of the local neighborhood. Magnolia delivers this in spades. It is a typical four-storey house in a typical street in... More

We - self, husband, daughter - stayed here for three nights and it was great. Miranda's personal attention to our needs and interests made us feel at home, the rooms were comfortable and much more fun than anonymous hotel rooms. Walking up the staircase with suitcases was a bit of a workout, but part of the feel of the place.... More

Absolutely wonderful property that was situated within walking distances of every bar and restuaant that was recommended to us by friends. Colin was incredibly helpful even though we arrived two hours late. Would highly recommend this property. The only downside is that there was no storage space fo clothes, so if you are planning on staying a long time it... More

I felt safe in the tiny but very clean and cool room. The bathroom was a nice space for small area. The breakfast was small but good. I found the man who was managing very helpful. It was in a convenient area. It would have been nice to have a small fridge or TV access but it was a nice... More

An adorable, clean, well run bed and breakfast with to lovely people running it. The young man working there is incredibly helpful. He wrote out directions for me everyday. The breakfast was great as was the convenient location which was in walking distance of many sights as well as public transportation.

I tried Magnolia after reading some nice reviews about it and because I was looking for an accomodation alternative to business hotels. My flight from Beijing arrived very late in the night and the lady managing the place nevertheless greeted me with a smile, made me sign the papers for check in, handed me the keys of my room and went to... Found this hotel by tripadvisors with great reviews and we decided to stay here for 2 days. It was not a matter if the hotel not too busy in the early morning . The room was large enough, cozy and clean, bathroom worked great and breakfast was simple but delicious. The location was good, near to subway and great restaurants... More

Great spot as recommended by other trip advisor users. Central to the really interesting French Concession area. Markets, street food, gardens and locals make for interesting walks at any time of the day. Easy access to the subway. Looked after well by the staff with a homely feel to it. Stairs are a bit of an issue if you are... More

We spend one night at The Magnolia B&B Shanghai. Positive aspects: -Great location in the French Concession, plenty of great shops, restaurants, massage places etc away from big buildings. -Great welcome and hospitality. -Small hidden hotel with 5 rooms. -Great coffee and breakfast included. Negative aspects: -Really expensive for what it is really. We had the 'red room' and it's... More

We enjoyed our 3 night stay from having Collin arrange a pick up at PVG to organizing a taxi back to PVG. Suggest on a late night arrival at PVG that a car is arranged as it is far from the city centre and public transportation options are cumbersome. We stayed in the Green room that has a small balcony.... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
