Hotel check in was good, our room was modern and clean. They allow smoking through the whole hotel even in the hallways so there was always a smoke smell in the room which was worse in the mornings. Great facilities with a swimming pool but the location of the hotel is a 1 hour walk from the bund. Would recommend... More

We ended our two week vacation in China at this hotel. The rooms were modern and clean with spacious bathrooms. Our room faced the street and it was very loud even though we were on the 8th floor. The breakfast buffet was good and had a good variety of foods. Hotel lobby had a comfortable sitting area. We were close... More

I found this to be a great location because it was within the Jewish Quarter (a great place to wander around and see the local lifestyle), and only a 20 - 30 Yuan taxi ride to the Bund, (the promenade along the Huangpu River), The Oriental Pearl T.V. Tower, Aquarium or the Old Town for great shopping. Taxis were plentiful... More

I stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights whilst touring China. The hotel is very modern and pleasant. The room was very comfortable and clean with a very comfortable bed although I would not say it was 5*. There were not any proper tea/coffee making facilities which was a disappointment - no milk, powdered or otherwise! The breakfast... More

The Ocean Hotel, is really for business people, but our tour operator CHINAPAC uses the Ocean, very beautiful (but cool) rooms are pleasant, service is good, breakfast is okay. It's a little outside of the tourist areas, but if you like to walk it is fine. If you need a beauty parlor, there is one right across the street PRINCE SALON... More

Prior to arrival we requested a king bed, non smoking room. When we were checking in we confirmed our request to which the girl with very very very limited English replied "no" and looked very confused. When we went to our room, it was a smoking floor and our room smelt of fart, yes fart. We had twin beds and... More

After a long overnight flight to Shanghai from the UK we met our tour guide and were taken to stay at the Ocean Hotel for the start of our tour of China. We found the hotel to be well located in the center of the city. Our room was on the 19th floor and was clean, comfortable with air conditioning... More

Foreigners should give this hotel a miss. The staff are unfriendly, lazy and do their best to avoid having to assist you. The restaurants are just as bad. Waited almost two hours for my meal and when it finally arrived the food was cold and bland. The location isn't great either. No good shops or restaurants close by. Taxis aren't... More

A very good hotel which is well located in the centre of the city. Breakfast is good too although dining room staff have very little english if you need to ask for anything. There is a really good 24 hour mini-mart accross from the hotel if you need snacks, beers, etc.

This is a standard hotel with good facilities and service. Rooms vary, so ask to see yours before you accept it; negotiation might produce something better. Service is generally good and efficient, though of course not all staff speak functional English. Breakfasts are excellent. The hotel is located within walking distance of a metro station, and not far from the... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
