Hotel is in a good location, appears impressive from the outside, but upon entering the room, one is faced with a different picture- a tiny window (in both the rooms we had) with the curtains drawn across the entire wall to give a false impression of wide window(s). Their front desk staff were unpleasant and demanded a security deposit of... More

Stayed here as part of China tour. Nice enough hotel, good room and decent breakfast. Not the best location to get around if your an independent traveler. Staff were quite helpful except the pool area.

We stayed here for four nights. The hotel is well appointed and comfortable and most of the staff were helpful and welcoming. However, the staff behind reception, including those to do with accounts and money exchange were abrupt and unfriendly on the whole. A lesson in manners would not go amiss with most of them. For example, I presented some... More

Very disappointed with the rooms. I had 3 rooms here first was a dog box where the balcony had obviously been converted to a bathroom Second had no window only a frosted panel and shutters to try make you think you had a window Third was ok but we then moved to a much better hotel just up the road... We loved the excitement of Shanghai with its modern buildings contrasted with the classical ones. The hotel was out of the city centre so unless you ate in the hotel, which we chose not to do, the only choice was very basic restaurants who spoke little English. We found this fun, but it's not for everyone. Our room was on... More

Stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of 23 day tour of China. Had a room on 21st floor which was clean and comfortable with a spacious bathroom. Good selection of international and asian food for breakfast. Staff were helpful and the hotel was not busy.

We stayed here as part of our tour of China. Nice room and a good buffet breakfast. Would have used the pool if we had time! Easy to use free wifi in bedroom. Pity we had quite a lot of rain while in Shanghai.

We had booked an executive room and it certainly was a lot bigger and nicer than we expected. There was a foyer with the closets, a living room with a big sofa and a nice desk as well as a good sized tv, a king sized bed and nightstands partially separated from the living room and a marble bathroom bigger... We stayed at this Hotel as part of a 13 day tour of China. It was the last hotel of our trip. We were not really impressed with this hotel. I spoke to the manager after a problem with them charging my credit card 3 times in the bar/cafe area for the same meal. He was not at all helpful,... More

Stayed there for business, room is clean and with this room rate, it's fair deal. Breakfast is average, do have western food, but Chinese taste. Location is not convenient if you wanna go for sightseeing. Nevertheless taxi fare is low in Shanghai. Entered the breakfast room, but surprised being told my room rate does not cover breakfast, paid RMB 120... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
