Great rooms. Well equipped and great decor. Spotlessly clean. Rooms are on the smaller side, but the hotel more than makes up for this is in an great location (in the heart of the French Quarter, near the metro and the streets are wonderful to walk round at night but private, set back from the street and quiet). Good breakfast,... More

We spent 4 nights here on our first trip to Shanghai and the first impressions were great - the responses to my queries via email were extremely prompt, the booking was painless and directions and plans for checking in were explained in detail as we were arriving after the reception had closed. When we arrived (and we got there before... More

This was our first visit to Shanghai from nearby Suzhou, and the Quintet was the perfect place to stay. Po and Kenny took excellent care of us. They provided a map and list of nearby restaurants and attractions. It's in a great location-about 5 minutes walking to the subway, plenty of great restaurants, and lots of shops and cafes on... I have always been a fan of this hotel for a very long time - it is my favourite place to stay in Shanghai city, the perfect location as it is located in a very charming part of the French Concession area, with easy access to everyone and a 10 minutes walking distance to Jingan temple. Every time when there... More

This was once probably quite nice but is now no longer the shiny boutique of all the past reviews. With decor that is relying on a reputation that is clearly out of date the overall impression is weary. Sometimes chipped paint can be carried off with the power of personality but this was also lacking. Not sure who is in... More

We arrived at Quintet on a rainy evening after four nights at the Four Seasons in another city. What a departure from the usual it proved to be from the start. The charming five-room B&B is a 1930s building in the French Concession in Shanghai converted from an old family home. Located opposite a high rise building that houses several... More

The staff was excellent supported by their fluent English. The location is perfect (restaurants, metro, boutiques). It is housed in traditional French concession style house and very well maintained. The rooms are nicely decorated.

We don't have enough words to explain the wonderful experience we had at Quintet! so many thoughtful details and touches from Daphne and Quintet staff! We arrived late at night and found the owners with a letter for us, including all recommendations for our staying in Shanghai, and even a sign on the door, saying "welcome!", we felt so special!... We spent 3 nights at this B&B in the French Concession in the old city of Shanghai during March. Not a very big (6 rooms) B&B but the service of the staff was exceptional and very helpful in regards to tours, restaurants, shopping etc. There are no lifts but only 3 floors while the rooms have plenty of space, the... We stayed here 2 nights either side of a trip to Beijing and found the staff to be amazingly helpful. They booked our train tickets, organised taxis, helped with restaurant bookings and foot massage bookings. It was a quiet little oasis in a good area within walking distance to the metro station, would definitely recommend. Lots of good restaurants close... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
