Even though we had reservation and deposit paid they had no beds for us the night we arrived, so they drove us to other hostel (after almost 2 hours of discussion with us). Then, when we came back next day, it took us 2-3 hours to check in. We went to do some sightseeing and when we came back it... More

We are students and wanted a cheap hostel for our weekend in Shanghai but this place was not even worth the 4£ a night we paid. We were supposed to have out own 4 bed bedroom and instead had to share one. Part of the shower was broken. Checkin took ages. Security is pretty dodgy. We didn't get any room... More

This hostel offers very good value. Its location is convenient being based in a quiet, very clean site road right next to one of the best and largest shopping streets of Shanghai. It takes you 5-10 mins to the next metro station. We stayed in an en suite room (not as nice as on the pictures), which was clean and... More

Great location on historical street, room not ready on arrival cleaned quickly, although carpet still filthy and remained this way. Walls very thin, not great when the neighbours are rather enthusiastic about each other! Arrived back after day out to find the entire reception area and restaurant turned into a wedding scene complete with chapel and tables, photos taken and... More

I rarely complain about customer service or dodgy backpackers, but these guys really took the cake. Firstly, the staff spoke minimal english, which if you are running an international hotel is a pain in the neck. It took 15 minutes to establish things like, "my airconditioning is broken", or "what's the best way to get to the airport". Secondly, they... More

i agree that here is more like a hotel than a hostel, and i heard that they used to have another hostel a shanghai, while now is closed, i like the atmosphere here though chatting or socializing with backpacking is not that common here, but it's located in a nice and quiet neighborhood, which is rare in Shanghai, since you... The Hostel is situated in a nice cultural area & the building looks good on a wonderful historic street. Stayed at Koala Garden for two nights, our room was nice and comfortable. The decoration of room was colorful with some character and was clean. The staff was friendly, easy-going, and spoke English well. There was also a Metro station &... More

Hotel style with a restaurant downstairs. One waitress speaks English, they advertise breakfast but don't actually have any. Why is it on the menu then? Breakfast can be a a real challenge in China unless you can stomach Chinese food for your first meal. Quite far from the Bund and French Concession to walk unless you take the tube (but... More

I stayed here after extending a work trip for some sightseeing. The hotel is in a lovely street, mainly pedestrianised, close to a market with yummy streetfood. Its a 10 minute walk to the tube, but you get to choose form 3 different stops making the location very well connected. Walking to the tube is comfortable and safe. Altogether a... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
