I recently booked in here as it was close to where I needed to be. Price wise it is good for Shanghai, and the location is excellent being very close to the Metro and also within walking distance of some really nice bars and restaurants. Room was small yet clean but the bed was the most the uncomfortable thing I... More

Basic and clean hotel which is in a great location if you need to be here. The hotel is still very 'chinese' in nature though and if you can't speak Mandarin you may have some real problems here. Rooms are decent and clean but beds are rock hard as is pretty typical of China. Service is pretty minimal but comes... More

Good enough place to stay, not luxury but not uncomfortable. Pros: Clean room. Relatively quiet. Electrical outlets seem to be equipped to handle mosts styles of international plugs. Convenient - right by Shanghai Library on metro line 10 Nice neighborhood with trendy shops, restaurants, embassies and historical buildings. Breakfast buffet was decent, but definitely nothing to write home about Cons:... More

I was in doubt about what to expect from this hotel due to the reviews I'd read on some websites, but it was a nice surprise! The room I stayed in was big enough, comfy mattress and bed, aircon working properly, spacious bathroom, flat tv, toilettries, amenities like two bottles of water daily, tea and coffee, electric kettle. The only... More

This hotel was our home for almost 2 weeks during our visit to Shanghai. Not 5-star, a bit worn but clean and comfortable. Yes, the beds were a bit firm, but that's typical for China. Room had a "coffee pot" for boiling water, and a carafe for cooling. Hotel also provided 2 bottles of water daily. Housekeeping very accommodating with... More

Avoid this place – it’s a dump They changed the name sign over the door during my visit. This used to be called the Radius International Hotel Nanying, according to some of the in-room stationery, but it was formerly called the Nanying Ruige International Hotel and is still referred to by that name by several web-based agencies, and it is... This hotel has great curb appeal - flashy lobby, near the subway, and a somewhat reasonable walking distance to food & shops, all for a low price. Don't be fooled. The lobby does not represent the rooms at all. By American standards, this hotel is probably a one-star. It is NOT a true international hotel. I stayed here with a... More

If you are after a cheap, clean place in Shanghai, this fits the bill. But if smokers in the lobby and in the elevators bother you then keep searching. The location is good.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
