If you expect a backpacker area than you are right. Rooftop for drying clothes and smalltalk. Still one of the better cheap rooms in Kolkata. Rooms on the big rooftop can be a little be loud in the night. Hot water is provided for a few hours a day, you can take it with a bucket to your room.

Lots of foreign travellers stay here, and I met some truly amazing people who I am still in contact with, and in one case travelled briefly with, but if you're looking for a comfortable stay this place is not for you. The rooms are dirty and damp, with holes for windows which makes it cold at night. There is only... More

We did see worse rooms in the surrounding area (which is a good location) but still 600 a night for a double with a TV is a joke. Lucky we opted for this option though as my boyfriend got sick and needed a day in bed. He watched the Australian Open live and there was a movie channel. The rooms... More

It was really one of the filthiest places I stayed in in India (and I am a non-spoiled budget backpacker). the rooms are poorly maintained, it seems like they did not do any basic repairs for years. the ceiling looks like it's about to collapse any moment and the toilets are broken and dirty. not to speak of the bed... Nothing special but maybe better than others. Filthy and unfriendly but the roof terrace is kinda nice. Sheets are dirty. If you ask for another one they either refuse or give you another dirty one. No internet but it is cheap and safe. Staff just at the limit of friendly. If something doesn't work it will probably not be repaired... More

It's filthy, ugly, toilets do not work that well, smelly, but you it's just Rs300 a single room and Rs500 for a double. Staff are quite annoying about tips, and the manager is quite rude, but again, it's cheap. Warm water (buckets) and nice rooftop with great people are a plus.

After a recommendation in the Lonely Planet 2012 we went to this hotel and it made a good impression in the first place - Nice people found in the common areas and cheap rooms (a couple of disadvantages though - an exploding toilet flush and dirty beds). We were looking for a place to watch the coming Champions League finals... More

I was in Kolkata around Christmas so I did not have much choice. As a true backpacker, Hotel Paragon fulfilled my basic criteria - safety (good), bed (comfortable), toilet (working). Were the staff super helpful? No, but then again I don't ask silly questions like "how to go there" and "can you recommend something to do in here". They are... More

The hotel is very dirty, bedsheets not changed after last guest. Even after changing the sheets there are some sort of bed bug or cat flees causing itching whole night and day. Smells of cat piss and toilet and bathroom are not cleaned properly, esp the walls. Toilets do not flush and light bulb not working. A staff also hassle... More
