For the price paid, Fairlawn is one of the most cosy comfortable colonial hotels I've encountered. The room is clean, cosy and spacios. Breakfast and afternoon tea is included in the rate and the relics and common areas are quite ambience. The bathrooms even smells nice - a rare thing in India :)

It is very well placed, and the house is charming with a old school decoration straight from the colonial time. My room was clean and away from the street noise, tho the AC was quite noisy (old ones). The service is profesional but too much fussy if not unpleasant. Most of the guests are old english tourists and I felt... More

My 19 year old son and I called in here for a drink in the courtyard before going on for dinner at Oh Calcutta. at 6.30pm it was busy, with a young "cool" crowd mainly in their 20s. The lighting has a dim greenish hue, so its all very relaxing and a good place to chill after walking the hectic... More

This is the sort of place someone needs to buy and pump a million into it to do it up to revive a bit of glory and kick some life into it. Its quaint and nice for a drink and a meal , but honestly best to pass on the rooms. The memorabilia is interesting , but everything needs reworking... More

Colonial old hotel made famous in the movie, City of Joy, is filled with art-work, letters, photos and memorabilia noting the comings and goings of the rich and famous over the years: it is well located and a good stepping off point for Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, flower markets, eating houses and other must-see places. Cane furniture and indoor palms... More

I miss Violet Smith and I think the hotel misses her even more. My visit was marred by a noisy group of college students. Okay, they are young and want a good time but the hotel has no common area for them. The result was 2 nights of bad sleep. The staff need to enforce quiet hours for the benefit... More

This was our third visit to the Fairlawn, unusual quirky but lovingly kept and oodles of charm. Sadly Mrs Smith now passed away but her daughter and husband keep the hotel well up to a good standard. If you can have a room in the balcony please do. Internet great..Love staying here. The only need for adjustment is breakfast...cold chips... More

The world has moved on and I am afraid that fair lawns hasn't. The hotel is cluttered with memorabilia and that is about it. The room we were in is aired but has a very basic bathroom with a dodgy shower over a roll top bath. The fridge in the room hums to itself at a whim. Had to turn... More

At first I thought Fairlawn was tacky, too English, abrupt man behind front desk. But stayed 5 days so it grew on me. Most of the staff is quite nice and helpful. Waiter for breakfast could use a pep talk(how about a smile once in awhile). Breakfast is boring and the whole place disappointed me regarding it's lack of "India".... More
