Fairlawn is totally unique and irreplaceable, its style and warm family atmosphere, the colonial feel to it, the loyalty to the British Crown will make you love this place. Certainly the best value in the middle of Calcutta, next to the huge Newmarket (bargain hard there, divide every price by 4), parallel to Park Street where everything happens and its... More

Kind of like staying at nanas if she happened to own a 200 year old mansion in cenral kolkata...complete with tacky nicknaks and groaning with memorabilia........ These old mansions are fast disapearing in central kolkata...fairlawn has been a functioning hotel run by the same family since 1936.....although some of the staff can be a little tetchy,to say the least...in fact... In the squalor and chaos of Kolkata - the Fairlawn is a welcome island of comfort, calm and respite. Steeped in its eccentric history that it wears on its sleeve, the Fairlawn is probably the best place you'll find in Kolkata in terms of location, price and sociability. Every evening the breezy beer garden comes to life with Indians and... More

Have stayed at the Fairlawn Hotel before and just love the warmth and homely feeling one gets as soon as one enters this old fashioned, charming hotel. It is unique and is full of all sorts of memorabilia from times gone by and each piece tells a tale. Mrs Smith, the owner, is very much still part of the hotel.... More

I visited last month, god knows who entered my room at night. I saw the person as a shadow, roaming around my room, when I started shouting, the person ran off my room. I had spoken to hotel person, said that I hallucinated. This is utter non sense..I could have understand that any staff by mistake had opened my room,... More

First of all I used to be a hotel manager in Vietnam so I know what the guests in Asia would like to have in a hotel. The day I arrived I had an argue with one of the waiter, he was not friendly at all, I asked him what is a Julian Salad and he answered to me in... More

Except that most of what you've read about the Fairlawn is true. It's one of a kind, the last holdout of the Raj in Calcutta. Vi Smith, the owner, is still going strong at 93, and the atmosphere is unique from the moment you walk into the open-air reception and see the posters of Kate Middleton and the royal wedding.... Fairlawn Hotel is an unmissable experience. The hotel is so interesting and crammed full of "bits & bobs" that have been collected over the years by the wonderful owner,Violet, who originally came from Armenia, married an Englishman and together they started the hotel. Violet is elderly now,but still feisty and greets all her guests personally. Her daughter in law is responsible for the... More

I returned to the Fairlawn in 2014 38 years after first staying here and found in much the same. Great atmosphere, good service, large rooms. Good location on Sudder Street with good restaurants in walking distance. A great option for backpackers who are looking for something a little better.

A unique experience, with a majestic staircase and a story at ever turn. The walls are covered with interesting photographs and paintings and all the sitting areas are expansive and relaxing, both indoor and out. Great location just around the corner from the New Market and an easy walk to Park street and the Maiden. We had a big room... More
