If you expect cheap backpacker rooms than you are right. The most rooms are with attached bathroom and ok. On the rooftop are 3 very cheap and small rooms, but they are popular by single travellers and most time busy. Maybe one of the better guesthouses in Kolkata.

A good budget option in the Sudder street area, especially if you arrive late: they have rooms available until late afternoon. There are double rooms with shared or en suite bathroom. The rooms with bathroom on the first floor are brighter and clean and, though they cost more (600 Rs. per night), it's good value in Kolkata.

Right in the heart of Kolkata, Hotel Maria has some of the cheapest rooms around. I had no issues staying here. You get what you pay for at 250 rupees per night. like people have said, the building certainly has character and the staff aren't the friendliest but I wasn't expecting a 5* welcome and concierge service. Perfect for the... More

Building is old and has a lot of character...rooms are okay but bes ate filthy. It is cheap though, and I'd have been happy to stay here longer were it not for the manager being so blatantly rude and blasé about your existence. If you're someone who can feel the atmosphere of a place then you better go elsewhere. Such... More

As mentioned in most reviews, Hotel Maria is best to be avoided. Rooms are dirty and not maintained at all; you should see the mats they use! What's even worse is really the staff, especially the manager - just now when I was on skype down at the lobby, I inquired politely whether he could lower his voice, since I... More

Cheap for kolkata. The staff aren't particularly helpful but I didn't feel offended by them either. The building is huge and looks like it should be in a film. The rooms we stayed in had high ceilings and powerful fans. It is run down and dirty, but I've stayed in worse.

Unfriendly, unapologetically money hungry staff! Not even pretend politeness. Non responsive when you say hello even! Rooms were rotten and enduring very very loud street noise. Stay was made absolutely unpleasant by hotel staff. Many other lovely hotels on Sudder, I would not want such horrible people profitting from me ever again!

Arriving at night to Kolkata Maria was the first guesthouse I found. The location is central Sudder St and they offer off street parking. The Rooms are squalid, dumpy and dank but the high ceilings and fan make it at least barible. I've stayed in worse and It's cheap so I decided I would stay for the length of my... More

Cheap for Kolkata but Terrible. Staff unfriendly and all they wanted from you was your money paid up front. Room and beds were sordid the only saving grace being a high ceiling and good fan. The place is falling apart but with some love, care and money COULD be very much improved. The building in its prime would have been... More

If you need a cheap place to stay then it will do but the other reviews are correct.. it really hasn't been cleaned for a long time.. the beds were thick with dirt when we got there... after asking they gave us some ripped stained sheets to replace them... hopefully if you stay there you have a sleeping bag. After... More
