After a day of hiking around, visiting tea plantations, the toy train, and local shops, we were cold and tired. We made our way to the Windamere Hotel for their High Tea around 4:30 pm. As we arrived, another hiker was joining us for the same experience. The cost was 600 Rupees a person. We were escorted to a sitting... More

A knock on our door on Christmas morning at the Windamere in Darjeeling. Delivery of tea in a cozy and stockings with presents accompanied by the staff singing carols at our doorstep. That night a great meal capped off by service of Christmas pudding piped into the dining room by bagpipes. Countless other pleasantries and interesting guests from all over... More

This is an update from previous review. I spent Xmas and New Year at this hotel. The service, warmth and ambience is great.Staff very attentive and smiling. The majority of rooms and lounges all have coal fires which adds to the atmosphere and warmth of the buildings.During the festive season there is entertainment in the lounge each evening prior to dinner.... This hotel was developed for British tea planters and their guests and maintains its traditions including accommodations in two-story, small buildings; three dining room meals and high tea are included in the rate. The hotel provided box breakfasts or lunches if one were leaving early or would be away at midday. Staff are usually accommodating. The well kept grounds are... More

If Darjeeling is on your list of places to visit (which it absolutely should be because it's beautiful and quite unlike the rest of India), and you appreciate tradition, you should stay at the Windamere. Staying at the Windamere feels as if you've entered a place untouched by the harshness of modernity - with roaring fireplaces, black and white photographs... More

In the evening a coal fire is lit in your room, a hot water bottle put in the bed. Tea and tiny triangular sandwiches are served in the afternoon, lunch and dinner of an English dish and an Indian dish is announced with a gong and the whole place is presided over in suitably imperial fashion by a lady originally... Darjeeling is a pretty hill town in the Eastern Himalayas at an altitude of around 6700 feet. It is located in the state of West Bengal in India. Windamere is one of the oldest colonial hotels in the Himalayas. It is perched on the Observatory Hill, one of the high points of the town. The hotel comprises a series of... More

Darjeeling is worth the trek via car, sumo, or toy train and then you come to Observatory Hill. From the guard opening the gate you know you've come to a very special place. Shobana and Aman with the rest of the front office staff truly welcome you to their home. My husband and I were allocated to Raja Raikut which... More

This property is a throwback to the old days of the British Raj. Some unique concepts like tea and scones by a log fire is something that not many hotels in India provide anymore. Food is very good. The location of the hotel is excellent, just above the mall road. They had let the hotel out for some film shooting,... More

Step back in time to the days of the Raj: Tea and cakes served by a log fire on arrival, served by a waitress with a starched white apron; the cosy rooms, in what feels like a sprawling home-counties house, with coal fires and hot water bottles provided (and you'll want them at that altitude!); wonderful views from the belvedere;...
