Some people will find the Broad Lands, two words, a dump. I found it an absolute jewel, elegant in her fading glory. My room had 16 foot ceilings, two big ceiling fans, large bed, desk and chair. Beautifully shuttered doors and windows that should have been replaced 50 years ago. Explore the nooks and crannies to find a magical property.... More

Broadlands was the first and best hotel we had in India so far. The price is good and the rooms are the good kind of basic. The place has a special feel to it. The tree in the court and rooftop make it a calming place in the middle of Chennai's busy center. The staff is really great. Especially Raja... More

I haven't managed to know about this supposed "no indians" policy, which would definitely be a let down. However, apart from that it's a great place. Crumbling, indeed. But it still has this special feeling. We had a room on the first floor, which was absolutely worth its price. No hot water, simple but sufficient features. The place is quite... More

Firstly, this place is a good choice if you're accustomed to travel in India and budget accommodation in India. Yes, it's a bit dirty and the beds are a bit lumpy but it's OK. The building itself (and old colonial house) is quite charming, in that crumbling held together with paint sort of way. The manager is a very friendly... More

I've been to Broadland's three times over the past year. Don't think that I therefore love this place - as I certainly have no such feelings. However, there are certain reasons why one would return. The Positives - Generally a very nice atmosphere. Always met decent people whilst staying here, which is perhaps the most important thing in any budget... More

Settled in an old fascinating colonial building where often movies are shooted, the staff and the atmosphere are friendly. Rooms with concrete floors are bright, fresh and clean, as well as the shared bathrooms. Nice view from the roof, where you can sit alone reading a book. Wifi is Rs.50/day only close to the reception. In the area there's plenty... More

We booked a 3 night stay online. They wanted payment as soon as we arrived to ensure that we didn't up and leave. Even by India standards this is the worst we have seen. Filthy beyond belief. I had to use a travel pillow because the pillow smelt of unmentionable things. Who smells a hostel pillow before they pay...and they... More

Nostalgic hotel in a former city palace, basic but clean, plenty of ambience, friendly helpful stuff, central location, you can't find better value for your money. I have stayed there so many times since I discovered it in 1996.

I loved this beautiful guest house. I told my brother to go there on his trip to India. I will hope to return at some point in the next years. An excellent place to go if spending some time in chennai.

Don't let the mixed reviews of nostalgic or young uber-bohemian backpackers fool you into thinking this is an ok place to stay a few nights--it's an absolute dump. Maybe if you just want to meet other backpackers or are under 25 years old, you might like it here as some obviously have, but my partner and I, who have stayed... More
