I went to Kumul lodge for six days in August, 2014 with photographing Birds of Paradise as my focus. Six days is a relatively long time to spend there and I expected to have gigabytes of BoP images to bring back with me. Birds - I got good photos of only the two BoP's that come to the lodge's feeder,... More

Our visit this time was during the Sing Sing festival in Mt Hagan. The lodge was filled to capacity. The food is basic but filling the birding as good as usual with bird of paradise sightings. We stayed in a different room this trip and it was quite noisy, room 13. We lost power one night during a hard rain... More

We recently stayed at Kumul Lodge, a short drive northwest of Mt Hagen, and had a wonderful time! It is a landowner lodge, constructed entirely of local materials, and is unique in that it has feeders (with an observation deck) for close viewing/photographing of visiting birds including several Birds-of-paradise. As PNG birding is notoriously difficult, these are the best looks... More

We spent four nights there and the power went out four times. That wouldn't have been so bad except that the electric blankets are the only source of warmth at the lodge. This wouldn't have been a problem had it been sunny and warm, but unfortunately, we had rain and cold. That said, the location is the best available for... More

locally owned hotel in a stunning location with amazing atmosphere and birdwatching both for specialists and those who just enjoy nature. Food is plain though good fresh veges. Be prepared for cold and despite electric blankets rooms are cold in evening and night. Be careful of PNG's inflated costs with add on charges for all goods and services. It has... More

Kumul Lodge is tucked away in forest up the hill from Mount Hagen. The drive up is beautiful and interesting with local impromptu markets on the roadside. it is very beautiful there. You can see Birds of Paradise there. The rooms are, well, rough. We had no warm or hot water and it was very cold. The rooms are made... More

Kumul is awesome for it's birding and surrounding forest. The accommodation is good, but overpriced as are most places in PNG. The food was average. I had to keep reminding myslef that I was paying for the location and the pleasure of seeing birds of paradise come into the feeders and not so much the accommodation and food - the... More

LOCATION - Kumul Lodge is very rustic, hostel-type accommodations located about 1.5 hours from Mt. Hagen, 8600 feet high in the mountains, nearest the village of Anji Walya in the Wapenamanda area. I'm not sure why it's listed in the Mt. Hagen area, I guess because it's the closest main town, even though by no stretch of the imagination is... More
