we have just returned from 6 nights at japamala resort on tioman island- we had a pleasant and relaxing stay. the resort has lots of positives although we did feel that considering the price we paid (close to £200 per night) the resort may be slightly punching above its weight. the biggest asset of this resort are the staff- aruni... Just back home form 6 night at Japamala and I can't describe the resort as anything but a slice of paradise. A tranquil paradise with 13 chalets,(approximately 26 guests) with two pools, two beaches and enough pavilion/beach beds space for all. I'm not sure how I will adjust to a normally crowded resort again... The chalets are made of wood... More

Having spent 3 night in another resort on Tioman we were absolutely delighted to arrive in Japamala for a further 3 night stay. The resorts private speed boat collected us and after a short 20 minute trip from Tekek we arrived. Aruni, the resort manager welcomed us and showed us around. There are only 13 chalets in Japamala so you... More

We had a nice time at Japamala, and if we had paid a lot less for the experience I would have given it a better rating. But having spent over £250 a night to stay at a beach hotel in south-east asia, as a splurge for our last holiday before our first baby, we had certain expectations in terms of... More

My husband and I spent 5 nights here at the end of our honeymoon! We had such an amazing time, the place is so relaxed and chilled out. The water is beautiful and very clear. We spent the days relaxing on the beach and snorkelling and the evenings enjoying the free cocktail happy hour and delicious food at Mandi-Mandi. I... More

My wife and I stayed at Japamala for 7 nights in May this year as part of our honeymoon. We had a fantastic time, from the second we were greeted by the manager on the jetty to the day we left. Loads of attention to detail and very friendly/smiley/helpful staff. We really hope to go back one day...

The resort is situated on one of the most beautiful spots on the Tioman island. As you will read in other reviews the traveling to get to Tioman is not a great experience. But it is worth it when you arrive at the resort. We stayed there for a week and was treated with excellent service by the resort staff.... More

We stayed here for three nights for some chill out time after a few hectic weeks in the hustle and bustle of Vietnam and Cambodia. The ferry ride over to Tioman isn't a particularly pleasant experience but when you arrive at Japamala you are bowled over by its beauty . We stayed in a hillside sarang which kept you fit... More

Japamala has around 16 chalets. We lived in a tree top chalet and it was excellent. The rooms are cleaned once in the morning and in the evening cleaners lighten candles with aroma oil in your room, so when you are back from the dinner, there is a nice smell in your room. The room has all what you need-... More

Certainly don't have to travel to super touristy spots in Thailand or maldive, mauritius to get beautiful beaches and exclusive resorts. Owner is Italian and apparently has a Malaysian wife and this explains the superb east-west Food/room/service etc. of the whole resort. If you are into shopping, or fret at the slightest feel of grass and sight of 4 to... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
JapaMala is Tioman Island’s only boutique resort, and one-of-a-kind in Malaysia. This small and exclusive resort of 13 rooms is hidden amidst 11 acres of lush tropical rainforest. A one-village-one-resort property, JapaMala has its own private and quiet beach. While some charming Malay village-style villas and chalets dot the jungle and beachfront, others nestle in the most breath-taking spots.Best described as an ‘eco-luxe’ resort, JapaMala transcends the experience of living close to nature by redefining it with a touch of luxury. Designed by natural streams, steep cliffs, towering boulders and where no trees are felled, the entire resort borrows from nature its elements to offer an exceptional sense of paradise, freedom from the real world. While serious relaxation is an elusive commodity for many, one can truly succumb to the healing effects JapaMala imparts through its holistic blend of sumptuous gourmet treats, intimacy between man and nature, unique spa experiences and truly unprecedented hospitality. Many say JapaMala is not just a place, but a state of mind. ... more   less
