The Vijay Vilas Palace at Palitana, built in 1906, has been opened as a homestay by its gracious hosts, Yashpal Singh and his wife Nitya. His hospitality and her culinary skills and caring gestures made our stay memorable. We spent a lovely evening in their midst, soaking in the rich history and the vistas of their sprawling palace home. Even... More

What a fantastic place but it redefines the word 'Palace'. It was built in the early 20th century and the public area retains most of the original Raj-period decor - tiled floor, beautiful cornices and furniture, fun artefacts including family memorabilia - photos of the original owner with the top rank British 'ruler' and letters from him thanking the owner... It is the nearest place to Palitana so we chose it, knowing that according to the reviews it was dilapidated. We were fortunate to have a wonderful enormous room with plenty of atmosphere. The terrace with porch swing and chairs was a lovely respite from the rigors of climbing Palitana. The grounds outside are also lovely. The food was quite... More

The great thing about this hotel is its proximity to the incredible Jain Temples on Shatrunjaya Hill (Palitana). As others have remarked, it is terribly sad to see what the palace once was, especially as we'd recently stayed at Orchard Palace, Gondal which has successfully made the transition from Raj era 'boutique' palace to lovely hotel. This hotel desperately needs... More

I get what some people are saying, This is not a five star hotel. That's the point! It is a country home. The rooms and bathroom are basic but big, clean and more than adequate. The real joy of staying at Vijay Vilas Palace is the ambiance of the place. The furnishing and textiles are beautiful. The food is wonderful... More

Vijay Vilas in the village Adhpur near Palitana was recommended by guidebooks and travelers.  Unfortunately we had an awful experience and were thoroughly disappointed. We had to curtail our stay and checked out after the first night. The place is quaint and everything including the plumbing seems to have remained unchanged since it was built over a century ago. The... More

You might think that a stay here locates you in an ideal spot to climb Palitano. Wrong. You might think that a stay here will put you in a cared for, heritage property. Wrong. You will have a 20 minute drive to Palitano, so a choice to stay in Bhavnagar would save you from this dark, filthy, poorly managed property.... More

It is clear that owners can not afford to maintain this lovely palace to standards the palace was built for. Palitana has "only" one reason to visit: Jain complex of temples on a hill with some 3400 steps or aproximately 1,5 to 2 hours continuous climbing. A jewel to visit! But obviously not many foreigners come. So Vijay as the... More

We stayed 2 nights at Vijay Vilas Palace and were happy of our choice. The place is very special , still tainted with the charm of the past.Furniture, pictures, atmosphere give you the feeling the "Raj" is still there, and the Maharajas not so far away...There is also the reality of a house in the middle of the countryside with... Nortguys review of this hotel is accurate. The house itself is in a lovely location and on arriving it looks charming. The rooms are large and decorated in typical end of Raj style. But - the bathroom we had was pretty awful. Our bedding consisted of rather old fleece blankets and were unmade. (india is a land of fabulous quilts,... More
