I spent 2 nights at El Portal a few weeks ago, and it was great ! The staff is friendly, the rooms good and the location is perfect for those who want to explore the Semuc Champey pools (one of my best times in Guatemala !) and to be quiet (this place is isolated, no more electricity after 10:30pm ...).... Great location: about 50m from the park gates. It doesn't get any better than that. However, I feel they take advantage of this by offering inferior food at quite an expense from their restaurant. There is no kitchen for lodgers. The rooms were nice and the town is quite far - I hitch-hiked out - so there are few options... More

Great spot to stay near Semuc. Room was fine. We were upstairs, above a room. We weren't really aware what we were booking as it was open concept, luckily we had a mosquito net. Lot of bugs in the room and the music from the bar was really loud until past midnight. Making it impossible to sleep. You can walk... More

Wonderful location right next to the river. Good facilities and comfortable beds. Food is ok and not too overpriced considering you are in the middle of the jungle. Cheap beer at happy hour also a plus. The staff let themselves down though. They appear friendly but they will try rip you off when it comes time to paying your bill.... More

The accomodation looked so cool, tree house affect open air... But in reality beds were rock hard, I woke up freezing , no Mosquito nets. Staff try and rip you off... When we arrived we said we paying 40q and he said that's fine, but when we got our bill he had charged 50q but then changed it when I... More

The more you hear about this place from locals, the more it makes you sad. They don't have competition right next to Semuc and they don't care for gringos which is a recipe for unpleasant experiences. On the phone they said a shuttle there would be free then when we got there they made us pay for it. It didn't... More

The room was perfect with a nice view. But.....the staff LIED and act so rude to us all the time. They put more drinks on the check then we had. When we asked him about this drinks he knew he was liying to us. Then he told us the only way out of this town was with their shuttle. Not... More

Forget about any other hostel in Semuc Champei, no matter what they said... this one is absolutely the best. Two minutes walk from the park. The best view of the river. Great accomodations for all tastes. Good clean Food ( I was glad to eat a green salad in Guatemala). The staff is kind and very helpful. You have to... More

Beautiful spot. They really locked themselves into making it almost impossible for competition. They're right by the entrance to Semuc Champey and the caves. Thus, it was great to meet people, but I must give it a poor rating due to the unfriendly staff and bad vibes I felt here. The restaurant is quite poor as well, serving no Guatemalan... More

I heard a lot about this place and really looked forward to it. When there, despite for the distance (by the entrance of the park), I have to say I haven't see it as exceptional as described. Rooms (dorms) are basic, we were supposed to be in 5 and ended up being in 7. Toilets are ok, showers are small... More
