The botel - or boat hotel - has a restaurant on stilts in the middle of a lake with different sections connected by wooden walkways. There are apparently crocodiles in the lake but we didn't see any and the water looked a bit grotty anyway. The food took forever to come and the waiter kept forgetting the order for different... A group of 8 of us stopped here for lunch while touring the area. The restaurant and hotel are situated on a croc-filled lake which is home to wonderful birds. Saw my first Black Headed Weaver birds here (see pics). I tried the fish stew which was quite good. They never brought my order of plantains because they ran out.... More

Living amongst fabulous wildlife and birds and feeling like you are part of a national park. Music at night and a serviceable restaurant which is good value. Staff are helpful and our room were cleaned daily (OK sheets not changed) but fresh towels if you want.Rooms are a little small but you dont spend much time in the room as... More

Excellent restaurant in lakeside setting near Cape Coast. The dining tables are on small 'Islets' reachable by walkways with a number of trees quite close to them where a multitude of local birds nest. The lake also is home to a number of crocodiles (don't go swimming in the lake!) although we only saw two on our visit. Although we... More

This place was above the average because the active breeding colonies of herons and weavers in the hotel premises, but otherwise it wasn't much to talk about. The food in the restaurant was eatable, but nothing more. The rooms were not cleaned during our three-night stay and the water in the pool looked dirty. Otherwise it was ok.

Wow, a right little gem, the food is delightful, the rooms are clean, a pool which asks for no drowning, a lovely little place tucked away, something unexpected. Live music on the evenings, and the chance to go in the pedalo on the water. The crocs are usually out in the morning to brighten up breakfast time, but probably just... More

The location of the hotel is extraordinary, above a crocodile pool. You can have your breakfast while these modern dinos are swimming around or basking in the sun. The rooms are basic but clean and I can't complain about the service the staff gave. The food they serve can do better, but when you don't like it you can feed... More

I've stayed there twice now--Once in 2010 and again in December 2013. I love that it feels so isolated and how there are so many birds near/on the property. Amazing Weaver Birds who actually weave enclosed nests. On the 2nd floor of the restaurant you can almost touch them. Egrets too are in all the trees. I love the rambling... More

We have just visited Ghana again. The country is wonderful and the people even more amazing. On this trip however we chose to stay at Hans Cottage Botel in Cape Coast as we've done on an earlier trip to Ghana. Among many other moderately priced hotels, we continued to choose Hans Cottage, because of its location and it's easy access... More

Remembering that you are in Ghana and the poverty can be overwhelming, perhaps by Ghanaian standards this might be considered a better quality place. But by western standards, it is indescribably atrocious, run down and filthy and the alligators circulating only add to the horror show. We did not stay here and only ate (barely) thank god. My advise: Don't... More
