We stayed in Dali four nights, all of which were at Five Elements. We were welcomed by English speaking staff and two friendly golden retriever. The common space is open and airy with plenty of comfortable seating, a pool table, bongo, guitar, and two desktop that have access to facebook and google (Wordpress, also). We stayed in the double room... More

This hostal is located just outside Dali's old town city walls. Fine, so you don't have the hassle of going into the old town but are still nearby. The very friendly staff speak basic but understandable English. The communal area is convienient with a nice innergarden. Rooms are clean yet simple with a good matress on the floor. (Many Chinese... The hostel is just perfect. We had a (big!) double room with private bathroom/toilet for only 120 yuan per night. The food is correctly priced and good. The hostel organised a movie night, a dumpling course and explained the majong game. There is a good atmosphere, staff is very friendly and helpful. The bus to kunming is only 150m from... More

Almost definitely. From the moment we called to get directions, Matt; the receptionist / bar man / manager / all round good guy, was nothing but helpful and gave us plenty of tips on what to do in Dali and options of where to go next. The hostel itself is very clean including the room (doubles with ensuite available), it... More

GReat location as the bus from Lijiang drops you off just a few minutes away. Five minutes walk from the old town. Quiet at night. Is safe and secure and it's fine to walk around at night from the old town. Good meeting place for people. Staff are really friendly and helpful, especially Matt and there's a good atmosphere where... More

Rooms were one of the biggest I found in Yunnan. The hotel is nice and doesn't feel crowded. Staff at reception will assist you to book airplanes tickets, buses and else. Good value indeed. Walking distance to the old city. If going to Lijiang, a van will pick you up right at the hotel entrance and drop you where the... More

I found super helpful staff that I never had before. I used to work in a hostel myself but -calling the clients to make sure they are fine and can find the place -leaving the key outside at night to get in -giving massive discounts for even friends cause I stayed there for couple of nights are things that you... We loved our stay so much at the 5 Elements, we decided to come back to Dali just to stay there again! First time for 3 nights, the second for 2 nights. Incredibly good value (Y120 for a double/twin) considering the room size, facilities, location and the service. The staff (particularly Matt) were the best we've experienced in our 7... More

We chose Five Elements because of these good reviews on Tripadvisor and the prompt responses they replied to our queries. At first we only booked one night, later we ended up staying four nights because of San Yue Festival held in April. As other said, this is a very homey hostel. Coming into Five Elements felt like coming home to... More
