A very friendly place in a great location if you want to hit the beach. Some ok restaurants nearby and you can walk to the really good ones. Quite a residential area but the Mango Tree is plenty lively at night.

The best thing is the location! Walking distance to the subway, Ipanema Beach, nice restaurants and bars!! The rooms were very clean with a daily linen service! We had a private bathroom and the shower had great pressure and was hot! A full breakfast was served daily which was nice. Bed comfort was average. It was very expensive, although expected... More

It's perfectly placed, just two blocks away from Ipanema's beach. The dorms are comfortable and safe. The staff is very helpful too. They serve an absolutely complete breakfast!! It's fun during the day but quite at night, just perfect. It's clean. If I may criticize something I would say that there are no enough bathrooms, I ALWAYS had to queue... More

We got charged over 300 dollars a night for a double bed private room with shared bathroom. For this kind of money I'm expecting a certain kind of service and facilities. The bed was springy terrible and the pillow were paper thin. The bathrooms smelled of urine and overall it was a bad experience. If we were charged $50 per... More

The guest booked a double with shared bathroom, and in accordance with our world cup terms was charged in advance. When he arrived here he was with his elderly father and discovered that his room only had a double bed. He asked for a room with two single beds but we were fully booked. They did not want the room... More

Stayed here for four nights in August. Really good location. Clean and comfortable beds. Obviously a busy location - so our group of four ended up in a six bed dorm. It was fine. Really good atmosphere in the common area thou and lots of hammocks to hang out on

I am writing this review on behalf of my mother. My parents had just taken their first trip to Brazil and this was their first hostel stay. They are in their late 50s, and extremely pleased with their stay at the Mango Tree. Here is what they had to say: The rooms aren't the biggest, but the location and the... More

The Mango Tree was a fantastic place to stay in Rio De Janeiro, I'd recommend it to anyone! I was travelling as a solo female, and I got a private room to myself after travelling 30+ hours on a long haul flight for a bit of privacy and shut eye. I was so happy to have booked at the Mango... More

I stayed in Mango Tree for the 7 nights that I was in Rio. The hostel was absolutely fantastic!!! The atmosphere is great, the staff can't do enough for you, breakfast is the best we had in our 15 week trip and the location is awesome. Staying in a hotel in Ipanema would set you back a fortune and wouldn't... More

We booked this last minute so we can have some shut eye before a long flight back home. We were probably too tired to appreciate what it has to offer, but they could have at least given us a clean bed. We woke up with lots of bug bites. I agree with previous comments that it's a little overpriced. I... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Located in one of the best spots in Rio, just a block away from the world famous Ipanema beach, the Mango Tree offers a relaxing place to sleep, meet other travellers, and taste a chilled caipirinha. At our hostel you will find the comforts of a guest house (sprung mattresses, 100% cotton sheets, towels, a real Brazilian style breakfast, and our famous gas heated power showers) coupled with the warm welcome and atmosphere of a backpacker hostel. As well as the beach, it offers a wide range of bars and restaurants to suit all budgets, and plenty of shopping opportunities such as the weekly Sunday Hippie Market.
