This is a beautiful colonial house high up in the winding streets of Santa Teresa, with beautifully decorated rooms and gorgeous flowers and trees around the pool. The staff were all charming and friendly. Fantastic breakfast, served either on our own private balcony or in the shady pool terrace. Only disadvantage of the location was that you need to use... We stayed at Jean Michel's amazing place for the Holidays this year...without knowing anything about it...what a great surprise! The Staff is like Family; the view is amazing; the neighborhood is perfect; the rooms range from comfy to Lux ( we came and went over a 2 week period and had several rooms). It is private and quiet yet not... More

Mama Ruisa is a small exclusive hotel in Rio that really makes you feel like a special and selected guest. The rooms are wonderfully decorated, the staff are gentle, smiling and very helpful and the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant. Furthermore Santa Teresa is a charming little place with good restaurants. We and our adult children really enjoyed our stay... More

This is a perfect place to explore Santa Teresa. If you choose to leave. There is a lovely little pool, balconies and beautiful public spaces to sit and read or contemplate the fascinating art that is everywhere. We had the Carmen Miranda room on the ground floor near the pool. This was the least expensive room. It was very attractive,... More

We enjoyed our stay at Mama Ruisa a lot and would always recommend it. We travel a lot and with high expectations for unique and charming places to stay, not the big hotels, but places with atmosphere. Mama Ruisa offers exactly that. It was a very welcoming place, in a great neighbourhood of Rio and a place that has taste... More

Mama Ruisa is a brilliant little gem in the middle of Rio. The entire team makes you feel at home and welcome. I simply cannot think about anything that was not up to the standard I expected: the bed was good, the shower well equipped, the room spacious and clean and the location ideal (as long as you don't expect... I loved staying at Mama Ruisa. Loved the whimsical and eclectic interiors. Loved the variety of views from vistas of cable cars on Sugarloaf to gazing at a wall sprouting orchids while floating in the pool. I loved the tropical breezes sifting through the house creating a languid satisfaction in whatever the weather was bringing. I was most grateful to... More

The grounds were beautiful. The staff was friendly. This boutique hotel is centrally located, near (driving) to the convention center, copacobana and walking distance to shops/restaurants and historic sites. My room had a beautiful view of sugarloaf mountain.

This hotel is magical and was by far the best hotel experience I have ever had. The guest house is over 100 years old and has been lovingly and respectfully styled and restored by Jean Michel to showcase it's uniqueness and beauty. Much like the hotel, the neighborhood of Santa Theresa is colorful and vibrant with real character. The service... More

The good: Amazing views of Rio, both the sea and the favelas. It was really important to us that we felt like we were in Rio, not just anywhere, and it ticks that box. Breakfast is lovely Swimming pool is beautiful Lydia on reception gave us great recommendations and booked tables for us The not-so-good: Our junior suite felt a... More
