Wonderful place, just at the border of Copacabana and Ipanema and handy for the beach and metro into the centre. The room was lovely with a little balcony and the breakfast was good with lots of little design touches. Great WiFi. My taxi driver did have a bit of trouble finding the place and it is up a bit of... More

My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time at the Abbey of Design. The whole property was very comfortable and clean throughout with a lot of outdoor space and various places to relax, read and enjoy the coffee. Chafik and Mounir were very helpful from the moment we made the booking providing us with personalised recommendations of things to do,... More

We stayed for 4 nights in May and the most wonderful time! Chafik and Mounir couldn't have been more helpful, showing us the map and recommending places to see and restaurants to book. We loved every place that they suggested and the advice was invaluable for two people visiting Rio for the first time. There's a great atmosphere at The... More

We stayed for 3 nights and felt right at home. We stayed in an ensuite room which was very spacious and had an excellent shower. The B&B is a bit of a walk up the hill but worth it to be convenient for both copacabana and ipanema - the metro is also very close by.

Brilliant location 5 minute walk behind Ipanema beach. Very cool and designery hotel so will appeal to anyone with an interest in interiors and aesthetic. Fred was one of the most helpful and welcoming hosts I've ever met. Would recommend to anyone going to Rio.

Chafik was a great host, welcoming us to his home and being super flexible in allowing us to arrive a day earlier than planned. The Abbey of Design is an incredible place to stay, and totally unique. The decor and furniture is beautifully styled, with each of the three rooms having their own colour scheme. We had a private bathroom,... More

This place is a hidden treasure for design-lovers! Behind the wall, there is an old convent, transformed by designer Chafik into a wonderful small hotel. You will see stain glass windows as well as trendy furnitures, everything working out perfectly. The Abbey is also perfectly located, 5 min walking distance from the Ipanema beach, the metro, bars and restaurants. Chafik... More

I'm almost reluctant to write this review and add it to the list of glowing ones because we'll have to book so far in advance next time we go to Rio! But the place is so exemplary that everyone needs to know about it. We were lucky enough to get a room only a week ahead. While we only had... More

This is so much more than a hostel- it's literally a work of art by owner/creator/ manager/ designer Chafik. It's brilliantly situated, reasonably priced given the quality, clean, peaceful and close to everything. Chafik was a great host and it felt like we had a small palace to ourselves with the large patio/ balcony. There are only three guest rooms.... More

A really interesting place - an old convent converted by a talented interior designer. Lovely rooms with the old stained glass windows. Stunning modern bathroom. You can walk to the beach from here and there are lots of restaurants on your door step. Yummy breakfast. There isn't air con or daily room service though. I would still really recommend it... More

Staying in Ipanema

Neighborhood Profile
Ipanema
Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.
