Not speaking Portuguese, arriving at 5AM, we had some confusion with the night staff regarding the room charge. He started calling the police! He eventually called the owner and we were able to come to an agreement (unclear why he didn't call the owner first). It is a lovely hotel, and you can't beat the location. However, being threatened with... More

My wife and I stayed at this guesthouse for 2 nights in Feb 2015. If you like old historic homes, then this is the place for you. The owners (Margarida and Stefan) restored this old colonial home some years ago now, and it really is a throwback to decades gone by. In terms of location, it's in a really great... More

We stayed here for a few nights and enjoyed our stay. Mangarida speaks decent English and was very welcoming. The building is an interesting colonial style that makes you feel like you've travelled back in time. Nice breakfast too with fresh bread, cheese, jams, cake, fruit and freshly made coffee. Good location near to everything you need in Paraty. Just... More

Very beautiful hotel, perfectly located in the old center. The wodden flor and furniture give it a lot of charm, and the dogs are nice (and more often in the street than in the hotel). The owner is helpful and smiling : it's a perfect place to get into Paraty atmosphere.

This hotel is not for those looking for a traditional hotel-like environment. It does indeed feature a menagerie of animals in the lobby and the reception area is piled high with paper and many books. Unlike another reviewer here, we found the lobby and the cat to be very charming. The building is a throwback in time, with wonderfully high... More

As soon as you walk through the shutter doors you step right into a movie set. The family that runs the hotel are very sweet, the WIFI was solid, the breakfast was great and the location is amazing. A source of entertainment is 'Cafe', the household dog.

Strangest hotel I've experienced in a long time. When you approach, it's tightly shuttered up, as if the building is abandoned. No lights or lit sign. A knock on the door though, produces a hotel staffer who peeks out, and three loudly barking dogs. The "lobby" was filled with papers and dusty books, and a very grumpy cat. Air conditioning?... A pleasant stay here, the owner was particularly friendly and we especially enjoyed the company of the cats and dogs there! Slight issue with hot water on the first day but ok on the second. Overall, clean, pleasant and full of character!

Really lovely and interesting house. Location couldn't be more central and the rooms have beautiful views over the square. The lady who runs it is exceptionally helpful and friendly and speaks perfect english. Breakfast is an absolute feast.

I enjoyed this place. It oozed with old-world charm, especially the lobby and breakfast areas. The black cats fit right in, as did the five dogs kept by the owners. We enjoyed getting to know Cafe, a stray lab that the owners took in five years ago. What a life he leads! The owners let him out in the morning... More
