Extremely nice views, and quite cozy rooms. However, the service was better than either; very friendly staff, always willing to help. It was also quite nice having a taxi boat for ourselves to go to the village and back. The only major downside is that the showers take up to two minutes to warm up. Apart from that, everything was... More

We suffered some inconveniences that are usual in remote brazilian places like water and power outages, but what we didn't like of this hotel was that when we decided to leave a day before we planned in principle, they refused to compensate the expenses we made with what we already paid (they ask you to pay in full your stay... We just returned from our annual trip to Asalem. Incredible. We always come away from Asalem feeling recharged and relaxed. Andre and his staff always make us feel like family. We also love the fact that the owners, Andre and Bianka, are always looking to make Asalem even more eco-friendly. Solar water heaters, green building design concepts, eating locally grown/caught... Asalem is paradise - surpassed expectations and ranks among the best places I've ever been (as a fairly well traveled/hospitality architect). I could go on with details, but offer a few tips based on our experience: 1. We only stayed two nights - left wanting more, so I'd suggest 3 as a minimum. 2. We stayed in the honeymoon suite.... This is an amazing place. The staff was fantastic and we never wanted for anything. Yes its not a five star hotel. It isn't to meant to be. What it may lack there it far exceeds in every other aspect. They do not rush dinner. You sit and enjoy your drink and each other in a paradise setting ! Who can complain... More

This was my second stay at Asalem (the first in 2009) and it was another great experience. It is tucked away in a quiet bay about a 10 minute boat ride from the island's main city/port, Abraao. That main city is nice and full of great restaurants, but it's a shame to travel all the way to Ilha Grande only... More

We have heard of paradise, we have seen images, now we have been there. Exceptional food, clean room, great people and service. Asalem is a beautiful and comforting place. Visit to dois rios is worth your while. We loved the "taxi-boat" home watching the stars. It was probably the nicest place we stayed at during our month of traveling in... More

We had an overall OK stay in Asalem for 3 nights. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the common are has a great view, but unfortunately these do not make up for the many shortcomings of the place. Extremely overpriced, poor breakfast, old bathroom with a rather uncontrollable shower, very thin walls, smelly bedroom area, no wi-fi in... More

Our rates reflect the fact that we are located in a remote island with restrict access and are offered very few options of services and providers. The standard bathroom showers have all new solar water heater system, and as you mention, it had problems with pressure at the beginning. It has been all solved and it is now running beautifully,... One of the worst hotels I have stayed in. Ridiculously overpriced for what it is. Bugs in the room, including in the bed. Mold and rust in bathroom area. No wifi in rooms, only in common area. Breakfast was terrible. I have had better at hostels before. Service was terrible. The boat didnt even come and pick us up, even... More

This couple tried to leave the hotel without paying for meals, services and accommodation - which they refused to pay at check-in as we usually request, so we strongly believe they had planned their scheme prior to arrival. Once the management noticed their absence we started an immediate search, contacted the local authorities and boat transfer agencies in order to... More

We loved our stay at Asalem. The friendly staff knows their turf and were able to help us make the most out of our stay. The hotel's location away from the hustle-and-bustle of town was a plus. Also, for what it's worth, the place is gay friendly. When we go back to Isla Grande, we will definitely stay at Asalem.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
ASALEM is a seaside hideaway situated in Ilha Grande, a protected reserve of natural land where no cars are allowed. All our 5 enchanting waterfront suites are surrounded by the rain forest that overlooks the spectacular Bay of Abraäo. This proximity to the ocean offers rare, intimate glimpses of sea creatures such as starfish and turtles, as well as abundant schools of fish. The forest brings frequent visitors, including monkeys, squirrels, fireflies, blue butterflies and a wide variety of exotic tropical birds. This unspoiled peace of paradise is the perfect spot for honeymooners looking for privacy: we are 20 minutes apart from the main village walking in an accessible path or 5 minutes by the taxi boat we provide. Apart from the taxi boat service, available 24/7, we can arrange boat trips, transfers, massages, scuba diving, snorkeling and guided hikes. ... more   less
