A striking building from the 1940s by Oscar Niemeyer with some good period furniture and effects. The staff are really helpful and very pleasant; it was a great joy to have all our luggage carried up to our room (it is a hilly location!). Good parking and an excellent central location with a number of good restaurants nearby. The hotel,... More

I had the pleasure of staying at this hotel with a small group of students from the US. One of the favorite stops of the trip was our visit to Ouro Preto. This hotel added to the experience because of it's charm and character. The architecture is very unique and takes full advantage of its location with views of the... More

I am currently staying here, on business, and I am so excited to check out in the morning. I cannot and will not fall asleep because I am afraid what may come crawling out. I am not sure where people are getting these photos from, but they DO NOT reflect this hotel. I noticed the site, or some users, highlight... More

This is a beautiful hotel and the suites with the wooden spiral staircase are an absolute delight. I don't understand why it is described as an eyesore - it's so well designed that you can barely see it from the town (not so wonderful when you are trying to find it!!) and inside its clean bright lines are a lovely... This hotel is a classic, elegant architecture, actually the first of Niemeyer's creations to be built. Other people have spoken about the quirky rooms (the suites) with the spiral staircase. Ours was in very good condition - but can't speak for them all. Beautiful wooden floors. Huge airy reception and lounge area, dining on the veranda with stunning views over... More

Once you stop looking at the beautiful architecture and furniture design, open up the huge balcony windows and take some time to look at the view. You can see the whole of Ouro Preto and it's stunning. Yes, this hotel is old, yes it's tired but that is it's charm. we stopped in one of the suites and I couldn't... More

The hotel for me is a must in terms of what it represents. It was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, an iconic character worldwide known. The influence of the modernism is everywhere, including the superior rooms, which I recommend, with their curved staircases and balconies. The pilotis at the ground floor are amazing, as well as the Niemeyer pictures that are... More

The Lonely Planet very aptly characterises this Oscar Niemeyer designed hotel as a bit of an eyesore: indeed, its glassy exterior clashes with its immediate environment. Unfortunately we did not have a room in front but at the back. Both room and bathroom were fairly small and very simple but reasonably comfortably. When we were at this hotel it was... More

When was the last time you stayed in a hotel room with a spiral staircase leading to a loft bedroom? Designed by the iconic Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1938, and completed in 1940, the Grande Hotel occupies a strategic hillside overlooking part of the city of Ouro Preto. You get the feeling that the hotel hasn't changed much in... More

While it is true that this hotel could use a bit of a renovation (paint, carpet, some fixtures) this did not diminish our enjoyment of this mid century classic. I highly recommend getting one of the superior rooms which offer a separate bedroom and a loft, as well as stunning views of Ouro Preto and the surrounding hills. The hotel... More
