Very few of the staff speak even a little english, so prepare your portuguese in advance. This is a Brazilian tourist destination, not a north american one, so do not expect to hear english anywhere. This hotel has all the things you would expect, just not in the quality you would . Our "twin" beds where actually two singles, and... more

We booked a standard non-smoking room for USD 66 plus $10 tax for a total of around USD 80 per night. No non-smoking room was available so we were upgraded to a superior room. The room was quite nice with a pretty good view and a nice bathroom. Following are pros and cons. Pros: - Very friendly and helpful staff... more

The Tropical is located in a nice tree-lined residential area with a fine park across the street. We got a spacious 1-BR suite at a bargain rate. It is a professionally-run hotel with a friendly, multi-lingual staff that was anxiuous to please. Food was good, but not spectacular, bar is nice (we listened to a fine pianist while watching old... more

Stayed recently at the Tropical Hotel da Bahia for a conference and vacation. We fortunately upgraded to a Junior suite and were quite pleased. We had oringally planned on staying at the Sol Marina but after reading reviews from this site, we were thankful that we made the switch. We did visit Sol Marina and the views are quite impressive,... more

I just came back from the Tropical da Bahia; overall, it was a good experience. The rooms, as noted by others, are pretty average, though I thought the bathrooms were fairly nice and more modern. The view is not great (though we could see a slit of ocean from our room) but the location allows you to access both points... more

The tropical Bahia is a quite good hotel, even if the rooms look a little old. One thing just got on my nerves is their stupid rule to avoid anyone visiting the guests : they refused my sister who to visit me, and there was no way to have them change their mind in front of a narrow minded manager.... more

All staff had an excellent attitude and it's true the rooms are a bit dated but you won't find many other hotels that are better in Salvador itself. Excellent location close to Barra Beach for a great sunset over the bay. more

Ok, most have made comments that I may repeat on. Booked a suite for 3 nights and on checking in told that we had been upgraded to the best suite - a duplex. Wow. On entering the hotel, I was filled with mis-givings about the place, looked and felt like a good railway station room. Was agreeably chuffed that we... more

This hotel is part of the Tropical chain run by Varig. This one is okay, providing a reasonable place to stay, but would never make a highlights list of hotels. It was undergoing renovations to the lobby area while we were there. The room was reasonably sized and the bathroom had been updated. The puke green shag carpeting didn´t do... more

The city of Salvador, Bahia is lovely but it could be dangerous, just don't wear jewelry or look too much like a tourist. Your best bet to be safe is to dress down and avoid walking in the city late at night. I stayed at the Tropical Bahia from January 27, 2005 to February 3, 2005. I left right before... more
