The ryokan is situated within the Zenkoji temple area. 10-min. bus ride from JR Nagano station. Big Japanese style room. Good Japanese style breakfast. Public bath onsen is quite small though. The entrance is located on the left side, after you passed the 1st entrance of the temple. No wifi in the room, only in the reception area. Friendly staff.... More

We really enjoyed our stay at the Matsuya Ryokan in shibu onsen. We called ahead from Nagano to let them know when we would arrive at Yudanaka station. The owner was waiting and friendly and we got a warm reception with tea, maps of the town and explanations for everything as soon as we got to the ryokan. Yukatas were... More

Would recommend as a great place to stay, in a great location. Really easy to find from the station by just heading for the Zenkoji temple. We didn't speak any Japanese and the staff spoke little English but still took the trouble to explain that we might want to use the Onsen before the visiting school party descended!

This friendly little ryokan is located within the temple grounds. We enjoyed our stay - it was our introduction to ryokans and it was so fun.:) the food was yummy, the bath lovely, and the staff friendly and accommodating. I would stay here again if i return to Nagano.

From the second we walked in the door, service was terrible, despite speaking in Japanese. The front desk clerk stayed on the phone while checking us in, we were woken up by employees coming into our room TWICE to tell us to go to breakfast - a half hour before the set time, and the baths are tiny and never... Fantastic and very traditional ryokan mere steps from the Zenkoji temple. The cabbie did seem to have some trouble finding it for reasons that escape me somewhat (given that it is halfway up the main pedestrian drag between the first and second gates to the temple), but once there we were pleasantly surprised. My teenage son and I had both... More

We stayed here one night (2 x females, 30-ish) early Dec 2012. Despite getting a little lost on the way there, we eventually found Matsuya, (it's in a little shopping street directly opposite the big wooden shrine right next to the road). As usual, the staff spoke only basic English but were able to show us to our room and... More

We stayed for three wonderful nights in a Japanese style room. If you want to the full experience, go for it. Walk around and listen to the chanting and drums in the evening, walk up to the buddist service each morning at sunrise, return to find your beds rolled back and table set for your Japanese breakfast, enjoy shopping along... We stayed here as part of a longer trip traveling throughout Japan. We booked a room with a Western bed and a private bathroom. The room was very basic, but clean and neat. The onsen in the basement was also very basic, almost clinical, but also very clean. They are quite strict about the eating times - we weren't offered... More

My husband and I stayed here for one night in early April, and wish we would have stayed longer! The location is on the grounds of Zenkoji Temple and very easy to find. The staff were very kind, and did their best to speak with us in English. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room which is set with a... More
