We stayed here for 2 nights with our teenage sons to give them a taste of a traditional Japanese inn. The Ryokan is within the outer wall of the Zenko-Ji Temple and is at the top of the main street leading up to the temple. It takes about 20 minutes to walk there from the JR Station. Our room was... Upon (late) arrival 3 pairs of slippers were waiting for us at main entrance. However they first arranged in nearby restaurant for dinner even though that place was going to shut down. Back to our room where tea was waiting for us . Really tradional ryokan . Room was quiet , and despite the 3 of us pretty spacey. The... More

I came to matsuya ryokan wanting a break from contemporary tokyo. And to see the Japanese macaques - the snow monkeys. It is spring, snow is melting fast but the air is crisp and fresh. I arrive early in morning so leave my bag at reception. Check in time of 3 pm was strict so if you get there early... More

Excellent location close to the temple. Stayed for one night and the hosts could not have been more helpful. The food was excellent and included local specialties. The area is quiet and great to stroll around in.

An elderly couple who own and manage this Ryokan (and all of the staff) were extremely welcoming and friendly. The onsen was good to warm up after travelling. There was always nice little touches like hot tea and biscuits when we returned from the day. This was my first stay in a Ryokan with my partner and it was great... More

I stayed at this hotel for only a night sharing a room with 3 other friends. We were suppose to check in after 6pm, however we arrived around 2pm and they allowed us into our room (which was surprisingly nice)! This ryokan is a proper japanese ryokan I reckon, I had stayed at two ryokans before however I had the... More

It's a traditional old-style Japanese Inn (Ryokan) very conveniently located steps from the Zenko-ji temple. The tatami room was clean although it showed some wear and tear and could use some fresh wallpaper. The staff was very friendly and the Japanese style breakfast was delicious. The clean rotemburo bath was on a smaller side, but it did have English language... More

The ryokan is situated within the Zenkoji temple area. 10-min. bus ride from JR Nagano station. Big Japanese style room. Good Japanese style breakfast. Public bath onsen is quite small though. The entrance is located on the left side, after you passed the 1st entrance of the temple. No wifi in the room, only in the reception area. Friendly staff.... More

We really enjoyed our stay at the Matsuya Ryokan in shibu onsen. We called ahead from Nagano to let them know when we would arrive at Yudanaka station. The owner was waiting and friendly and we got a warm reception with tea, maps of the town and explanations for everything as soon as we got to the ryokan. Yukatas were... More
